Yes, you should put a new front seal in the v-2 compressor. It is not difficult. I do not use anything but r-12 or r-134a in the A/C systems I service.

I converted my 89 Shelby Daytona from R12 to R134 in 1995. I have put about 100,000 miles on it since then and the system has not given me any problems (I do have a slow leak at the crimp of one of the rubber lines to the fitting now though). Compared to the R12 it does not work quite as well but is more than acceptable. Where it is most noticable is sitting in traffic. When I did the conversion I did not replace any seals, only flushed the old oil from the compressor and used the ester oil that is recommended for conversions.

Yes, you need to change the front seal to a new Neoprene item. This isn't difficult and the seal is widely available.
