Cool, thanks Dan. That matches what is on the car. 8) April 23, so it isn't a late built 74 Duster. Argh. I gues I will just use what I have and keep at it until something breaks or doesn't fit.

I have a '73 swinger that came with small upper ball joint and small bolt pattern 10" drums front and back. The 74 should have big bolt pattern big ball joint knuckles but who knows for sure? 73 was supposed to be the change over year.

I have the special sockets to turn both size ball joints so if you want to measure the size of the square head on top of the screw in ball joint Id be happy to check them against my tools to let you know which you have.

also-I have a set of late a-body (disc) uca's with new moog offset bushings you need em...

Kevin

Kevin- thanks. I have both size upper ball joint sockets, but I might take you up on that offer for the upper control arms with the bushings. Let me get farther along to the point where I can take some careful measurements of the dimensions and geometry of the upper control arms on the car now and compare them to those of a known disc brake UCA. I will know then whether or not I can use the arms I have or not.

73-76 still used SBP for drums I thought?

Nope. My brother's 74 has all drums and small bolt pattern, but I have seen 73-74 all drum large bolt pattern cars before too. I think after 73 factories were just using up the parts they had in stock on the assembly line.

I have a bushing question.

Would using the old UCA change the footprint of the car? I heard that some people use MOOG offset UCA bushings but others than said it is somewhat mandatory in this swap.. To me that just sounds like a caster adjustment though.

I've been interested in doing this but I was going to get Magnumforce racing Tubular UCAs.

Offset bushing are used to add camber or caster when the alignment cannot be brought into spec by adjusting the cam bolts. They are also used to add additional caster to make the care more stable.

You should use the UCA that goes with the spindle that you're using. It won't change the "footprint" of that car as the primary difference between early and late is the size of the ball joint. The principle dimensions are the same.

If you're using the large bolt pattern disk brakes then you need the late model UCA with the large ball joint.

Magnumforce upper control arms are made for seriously lowered drag cars so that they can get decent caster and that's all they are good for! If you want upper control arms built for more negative camber and positive caster, which is what most people aim for with offset bushings, go with Firm Feel.
