for those that flat tow,,,

do you have a brake set-up so the towed vehicle's brakes are activated with the tow vehicle. If so is there a preferred brand or unit,? Any ideas on cost?

I am leaning towards a flat tow set up as I probably will not tow often, and with that method I won't need to store a dolly or trailer.
the towed vehicle will be street drivable to some extent, no emissions testing in IN,, so it will have plates and insurance anyway.

John, Just get a dolly if you can.... It's prolly better in the long run and it will have it's own brakes lights etc...

I second the dolly. Mine has brakes and lights and is easy to move around the yard/driveway.

I was just about sure on going with a dolly, but then I started looking around some RV and some 4 wheel sites,, those folks are really sold on the flat tow method, what is favored most is:
1) convenience of not having to store a dolly
2) additional braking from the towed vehicle
3) they say it is easier to pull, no weight load on the towing vehicle

the RV's were mainly big self contained units pulling suburus,, but the 4 wheel group was a lot of jeeps towing jeeps and pick-ups and other like sized vehicles.

having a reliable braking system on the towed vehicle seems to be the key for flat towing,, but I am certainly still shopping around

The RVs are generally 26,000+# Busses flat towing a smallish Less than 4000# Car - That's a no brainer....

But What is your tow vehicle and what are you towing?

the tow vehicle is the 83 short bed D-150,, slant, a 833 OD,, this vehicle is currently apart in a 1000 pieces and is in the process of being "re-newed", setting the motor up for low rpm torque. Adding AC, power windows, cruse control, maybe power door locks,,,sway bars,, lots of sound control,, basically an 83 truck brought up to 2011 control and comfort,,, GVW 4500 lbs?

the vehicle to be towed (occasionally) will be the 68 barracuda, also a slant,
GVW 3000 ? and this is a guess, will have a full interior, will try to keep it lite, street drivable, plan to do some radical motors as time goes on,,, hence the towing capability needed.
