haha well that doesnt help me much. lol i see 4000-4500 above. so would 4500 be redline? i have a manual tranny and low gears, when i get to 4k its screamin pretty good. Never gone past 4k but if i can go to 4500, would you think itd make a difference in 0-60 time?

With a stock engine you could mat the peddle and listen to the engine scream for a loooooonnnngggg time! Keep it under 4k and it will out live you with proper up keep.

Going over 45 hundred on a stock engine will have no effect on a 60 ft time....

Ok. But I'm talking about 0-60mph sorry should have stated that before. I haven't been drag racing yet. So I usually do it on hwy26 from the stop light since speed limit is 55 there. My best time is 19.3 to 60mph but that's with about 8ft of wheel spin and the clock was started early.

How Does the Governor Figure into all this? I would like to learn.
The valve body is an analog hydraulic computer. This is why shift kits are sometimes called reprogramming kits. For the transmission to shift a shift valve has to move. Governor pressure acts on one end of the shift valve while there is a spring and throttle pressure on the other end of the valve. Governor pressure has to overcome the shift valve spring pressure and throttle pressure to move the shift valve. Raising the throttle pressure or lowering the governor pressure will raise both the 1-2 and 2-3 shift points. If one shift point is off then you need to play with the spring on the appropriate shift valve.

Do you have to remove the tailshaft to tune the Governor i.e. Putting weights or shims in the Governor itself or is it done in the valve body somewhere?
There are different weights available for the governor. Yes, the tail shaft has to be removed to service the governor.

Thanks!

You're welcome. I hope this makes sense!
Thanks Josh!
When I rebuilt the 904 for ruster I merely just cleaned and re-assembled the goveneor. It works and shifts the Way I need it to for Drag racing; the full manual valvebody works fine for the application, so For now I am going to leave it alone, But thanks for the Transmission lesson.

I am done thread jacking this now.

Greg

If you have a manual valve body the governor doesn't do anything.

It is simple shift about 4700 that is all it going to pull and leave it in second gear thru the 1/4. That is how my stock 69 Dart went thru the 1/4. It will probaly slow down if you shift to 3rd gear mine did. If you want to play with the govennor take the kickdown linkage loose and tie back the kick down lever wide open with a nylon tye strap. that puts maxumn preasure on your transmission . It will act funny in first gear. But It works . Thanks Ron

So Ron what you are saying is that you could run a bone stock slant up to 4700 without hurting it?

Yea my stock engine on day with no head wind would get to about 4700 and thats all. This would happen about 200 feet before the 1/4 mile finish line. This was with a 7 1/4 rearend with 2.76 gears whith is typical. Thanks Ron :D

is there any benifit to lock the kcik down linkage in the wide open using a floor ratchet shifter, where you shift every gear..
if I understand you then this would cheat to get max pressure on the transmission..

streetable?

The kickdown linkage is engaged with the throttle linkage the more throttle preasure more tranmission preasure. That works for the street and thats the it was deigned. When you tie the throttle valve wide open you are putting max preasure on the transmission. For this to work to pick up some time one assumes you load the tourque convertor on the launch of your car. Put your foot on the brake and throttle up and load the convertor then go wide open. If you are starting at idle then going wide open then just leave every thing stock Thanks Ron

now that I have headers and getting mo rad in general..the original kick down linkage is out of the car.it will not clear the headers..can I tie the linkage to the "on all the time " point..is this hard on the trans..still have the stock trans/torque converter and column shift. NO TRANS work done as yet.
basically is this street-able?

thanks.
