You can often get away with over-camming or over-carbing a 1200 lb car, but in a 2500 lb car, its a much different ballgame.

I had a 4 speed/4;11 rear 1960 vette that I put a 1967 427/alumin intake with a a holly 3 barrel 950 cfm and mech secondarys if u did not have the r's abouve 1500 when u punched it would die........

If it was running great, that's a testament to how the AFB, even if oversized, will tune on just about everything. What boosters are installed on it? What are the jets and metering rods? It's likely been running purely on the primary if the boosters weren't changed to make the primary smaller. The secondary butterflies are mechanical, the air door is not.
The secondary butterflies can be open as much as they want. If the air door doesn't open, then it's a big 2 bbl.
The metering rods go through the primary jets to vary mixture. The first step when dismantling one of these carburetors is to remove the metering rods so they aren't damaged when pulling the lid off.

There are 2-3 guys running 750 AFB's on their race cars that are on this Forum quite a bit. A bit much for a street car.They seem to like them. Maybe they will chime in.
