It does go left to right.

So is the difficulty just that the tank is larger, or is the strap in a different place...?

I just put a 63-66 tank in my 62 Valiant. I replaced everything, tank, sending unit and grommet with new. Everything went to plan until I got to the strap. The factory moved the hole in the frame rearward in 63. This causes the strap to mismatch its channel in the tank. Although the strap is a little slanted now it has so far held the tank securely.

In addition, I had to run a ground strap from the tank to the frame to get my fuel gauge to work. I have seen this to be a common problem in early Valiants/Lancers.

Did you use the original mou ting hole? My hole is 2 or 3 inches off. I was thinking of cutting another hole like the original further back on the frame to line up with the tank.

I did use the original mounting hole and it is holding the tank in place. However, I am not thrilled with the angle of the strap. It is supposed to be more or less vertical but, because the hole is off, as you noted, it comes down on an angle.

I have also considered cutting a new hole in the proper location, but it looks like it will be difficult to get a tool in there to make it.

If you go ahead with a new hole, please let me know how you did it.

If you can't fit a drill up in there, you might be able to go in sideways with a ball burr. (Wear safety goggles)
