Ok I'm back with hopefully good news for owners of 60 and 61 Valiants and 61 Lancers. I have found the exact replacement shoes and keeper spring for the early steering box coupler. I disassembled both 60 and 61 steering couplers and although they appeared different on the outside the internals were the same for both years. The spline diameter and spline count were smaller on the 60 as compared to the 61 but as I stated the internals remained the same. Crown Automotive pt.no. 998710k has the identical interal parts as the 60 and 61 couplers. I purchased mine from Summit Racing and paid around $45 including shipping. This kit includes new shoes and spring and a really nice seal that works with minor trimming. The only caveat is that the main coupler body will not work as the spline diameter is much larger. This really tightened my coupler up and now my steering wheel feels much more connected to my actual steering components. The Crown Automotive part is for various Jeep models from the late 60's through the early 80's. Hope this helps some of the early Toad owners out there. Hypervaliant |

Very cool sleuth work, Mark. Nice to hear about the steering tightening. Is that sucker now twisty-road worthy? It would be fun to meet between our places and cruise our Valiants together. This weekend could work for me. My 62's handling is now in excellent shape. Lou |
