I need to get a ratchet strap, thanks Reed.
It would probably also help if I had more space and a better floor jack, but oh well.
I did get the power steering pump and bracket reinstalled on the new slant six, I even installed the p.s. belt.
But I gotta get that tranny in...

Wes just pay attention as you tighten it down. if it gets any kind of hard to turn the wrench/ratchet before the gap between the bell housing and block is gone... something is wrong so stop.

yes i have seen this and even did it once... broke the bellhousing.
in my case it was a replacement motor that still had the pilot bushing in the crank. the poor 904 automatic did not survive. yes this is the extreme end of something is wrong.


not trying to scare you off, just making the heads up. ratchet turns steady easy with one hand... good to go. ratchet gets hard enough to want to use 2 hands stop and back up. look to find what the error is.

So, it did get difficult to turn the wrench, and I stopped. Then I backed off the bolts a couple of turns.
I think I'm going to hold off on the trans for now, and do everything else.
I installed the alternator bracket, power steering pump, the fan, and the two belts.

On the alternator, can someone direct me to a clear pic of how the alt sits in that bracket?

ok you have confirmed no pilot bushing, so what is left for issues is
1) something stuck between bell and motor... wiring of hoses etc. you should be able to see this from top or bottom.
2) extra dowels 2 in new motor and one in transmission. check the motor that came out for 2 dowels

3 misalignment, dowel not lining up with the hole in the bell housing. loosen all bolts but do not remove any. wiggle and jiggle transmission till it drops together. make sure convertor is all the way back in transmission and motor mounts are loose so every one can move while you wiggle.
if you can get a sight line on that side's dowel you might be able to see which way what has to move, ie tranny on that side needs to go higher to line up.

Loosen up the side that\s pulled together and make sure all the bolts are started but not tight. Then work side to side pulling it in.

I have 6" long bolts for the 2 bottom holes that I use to guide the motor/trans together.

Patience is the key. :mrgreen:

I've been away from this project for a while, but now I'm back on it.

So, I noticed that the 4 places on the torque converter are a little too far to get the bolts started that go through the flex plate on the engine.

So do I pull the torque converter out a bit? This is on the side where the engine is flush against the trans.

I would get the engine and trans bolted together flat before I bolted up the flex plate. Once the engine and trans are mated properly, yes, use the flex plate bolts to pull the torque converter back out. I have done that numerous times.

That said, I recommend separateing the engine and trans and see if maybe you have some crud in an alignment dowel hole or some other blocking issue.

When the trans and the engine are flush together, the converter should have a gap to the flex plate. You then pull the converter up to the flex plate and install the bolts. If there is no gap there is a problem and most likely will ruin the pump in the trans. There is a spec in the service manual for the gap, but I forget what it is. Generally if the gap is between 1/8 inch to `1/4 inch you should be good.
