Here I go again, thinking out loud...

If I were to cut out my spare tire well there would be a ton of room (well, 31"x34") for a fuel tank. Stay with me... Why not find a gas tank out of a EFI vehicle that would have the pump and everything built right in instead of using frame mounted pumps and surge tanks.

Any thoughts on wether or not I should spend a few days measuring tanks or is my idea flawed?

As long as you carried a temp spare, I don;t see anything wrong with the idea. Josh, I could not easily get the link to work for me. I have a Yahoo account, but I forgot my passward. It's been ages since I used it, and likely they have cut me off again anyway. What is the nature of the site you were sending cars to.
I figure I might eventually go the internal pump route with a modern tank some day. Tht would free up alot of space under the hood. I have been thinking a future project might be to get a modern tank and pump set up in the Dart..

Why not buy a replacement tank for your car and rework it to take a modern in-tank pump and pick-up? Then you know it would fit and there would be no need to cut the trunk etc.

Any idea worked well is OK. The thing about modern tanks that is nice is they have the proper baffles, vents and return lines to work already. I can see the appeal of both, and would probably think long and hard about the advantages of both before I started such a project. But your idea, cavisco, certainly has merit.
