Hey everyone and Happy Holidays. If my memory serves me right,I think it was Charlie who talked about fabrication of a cam button onto a stock timing cover.I can't find that info now.Think you could run it past me again?I would like to do that to my cover while I'm waiting for my block in the machine shop.
Thanks,Drew

This is a good up-grade and easy to do if you have access to a welder.
I have a special center punch which screws into the cam's tapped front hole and then I install the cover and push the cam forward to create a centered punch mark to drill by.

I drill a 1/4 inch hole and use it to screw down a 3/8 - 24 unf nut. I weld on the nut, you can add a large flat washer to the backside to halp stiffen the area. I run a tap through the welded assembly, then use rocker arm "ball screw" and lock nut as the cam stop. I also grind smooth the bolt head "face" of the cam's timing gear mounting bolt.

Once everything is installed, you can adjust the stop so there is .005 of clearance and lock it down. (do this before the oil pan goes on, so you can reach in and move the cam back and forth to feel the clearance)

A cam button is a device installed onto a timing cover to keep the cam from "walking" forward and possibly putting unneeded load on timing chain. Doc Dodge and other racers maybe able to give you a better explanation then I can.
Thanks,
Drew

If you get a lot of forward cam movement, it can throw-off the gear mesh between the oil pump gear and the cam gear.

This results in gear ware and failure. It is a good idea to check the gear's contact pattern and center it. Ensure that the cam won't move off that spot with the cam stop.
