I would appreciate advice on a good tach for a slanter for a street car (A body), either something new or to look around for an older used one. What are folks using?

Thanks.

Hey Bill,

I'm just using a plain black Autometer 8000 RPM tach (no features, like shift light, etc.). It has a switch inside of it for switching to 6 cylinder use.

Well, its not an A body, but in my Satellite I use an Equis mini tach, like 28 bucks, no frills.

I have an old AC tach from about 63-65. there were OEM for GM cars, 4cyl, 6cyl, and 8cyl. they are easy to wire (one wire to coil's negative post), look period, and are all adjustable for 4-6-8 cylinders. they go across ebay for $25-50. look for 63-65 Cutlass, Starfire, and Gran Prix units. I got one out of a 64 Cutlass and the one pictured here, I got for $2 at a flea market. It is in my 64 170cid Dart.

I never walk past old boats in junkyards, I've found some really nice tachs in junkyard boats including one that says "Chrysler". boat tachs,
at least a our local u-pull-it's seem to be worthless to the yards and I get them $1-$2 ea. most boat tachs are specific for 2,3, &4 cyl. engines, but they make nice cases to retrofit with cheap autozone mini-tachs.
