I was thinking or dreaming of this rolller cam stuff I got to thinking about the old Mini Express Cams Mopar used to sell for the Hemi andB/RB engines. These were mushroom tappet cams and the lifters went in from the bottom with minor machining (or grinding)The foot of the lifter was 1" dia. while the body was the usual Mopar .904. I built an engine for a racer out west with one of these (a 440). Mopar claimed they would produce within a few HP of what a Roller cam would. Somehwere someone must have a set of these lifters NOS. The cam blank would be a stock style blank and then you need a cam grinder to grind a profile. I think the mini express cams were .654 lift which would be net lift of .654" minus valve lash so would yield something in the neigbourhood of .626" to .622" with lash set. Racer brown can grind Mushroom profiles . I am on the hunt know for a set of NOS lifters. I see it as a practical alternative and with some care probaly the same power can be had since the slant 6 cannot use or does not need super exotic valve action. Just a thought anyway. Anyone have a set of those Mini express mushroom tappets? Don |

There are some cam places that still have mushrooms, there was a place out east that still had "saddle" roller cam blanks and lifters...You'll have to check with someone like Schneider cams. I think Cox Brother's are out of business, but one of the brother's still is in operation, those roller cam blanks were about $1200 when I inquired 4 years ago and are not a "street" item, you have to send the blank to be ground by your choice of cam company. -D.Idiot |

The roller cam thing seems too expensive so i am wanting to do the Mushroom thing. do you know any f the companies who still have/ or make the ld 1 inch foot dia mushrooms for the mopars? I cant believe they are all gone. Someone somwhere must have a few boxes of them sitting in their shop or warehouse. I have three good working relationships with cam grinders althouggh one only does regrinds so the cam for the mushrrom i think will be ok to getmade. it is the lifters i am wanting to find Don |

I got a bunch of Slant parts in 1996 from a friend in CA who moved away. One of the trick things was a set of 12 bronze sleeves that press into the stock lifter bores. ID of those sleeves is same as a VW flat 4 engine and you can use the huge mushroom lifters (1.1" diameter??) from those engines. Cheap and easy to get. I've never used them, but sometime... The sleeves look pretty easy to make. Lou |

That is trick. Lots of engines had mushroom tappets back in the day. Sleeving would work and I have 3 feet of solid round brass in the shop! And a lathe! |

The aluminum tractor engine I have has mushroom lifters in it. The engine came with some spare lifters NIB. They have a chrysler factory number on the box of 3690137. The face of the lifter measures 1.010, lifter body measures .903 and the overall length is 1.836. I know its been some time since you were looking for lifters, but this might help. |

I know this is a very old thread. Although I have been offered a mini express cam to run in my 383 low deck. It's really not suited to my car but I'm really thinking of running this for awhile just to see how much power & mph this little 383 makes. I know he has another cam in his shop. But it's the bigger .690" lift one. It may have lifters also. If I don't don't use it he would probably sell it. He's giving it to me but only if I run it. I think he just wants to see what my 383 will rev to , he's talking 8500 rpm. |

Your cylinder heads will run out of steam way before that unless your running some professionally ported Max Wedge heads or some of the high dollar B1 aluminum heads. It takes more than just a cam to run an engine to 8500 RPM. |

Reply with quote -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The aluminum tractor engine I have has mushroom lifters in it." What kind of tractor engine You said aluminum tractor engine. I switched computers and emails and got stuck on the off ramp for quite awhile till tonight. I had to reregister with a new name because I had been gone too long. I have reached the point with mine where I don't want to go any faster. Probably partly due to my age but the idea still interests me. I now get cams made to my specs but am still stuck with flat tappet normal size. don |
