Post subject:  Power Steering Question

I just put in a rebuilt power steering gear box from Napa into my 66 Dodge Dart. I noticed that I have some play in the steering wheel (about 4 inches total or 2 inches each side of center). I have a new Pitman arm and have just got it aligned properly. I would think the respose would be nearly instantaneous. I noticed that the worm shaft moves in and out slightly, resulting in the play mentioned above. Is this normal or do I need to do an adjustment to something? Also, I don't quite think I have my PS issues fully solved yet because it still seems pretty weak. Would a PS pump replacement be the next logical step given that the gear box does not seem to be getting enough fluid pressure?

I know this is going to sound kinda stupid to you, because the first time it was suggested to me that's what I thought.
Look at your ps pump pulley. The belt should actually be taller than the sides of the groove. If it is not, you've got the wrong belt. For some reason, when you go to buy a ps belt for a Mopar, they always give you the narrower belt. The only thing I can figure is the narrower belt must be a common GM size. Anyway, it does make a difference. Of course, a goodly amount of tension is required on the belt, too. Anyway, that's the first place I'd look.

There is also a worm-sector adjustment screw and locknut on top of the box. Adjusting that would likely help. Try tightening it in 1/4 turn increments. See a factory service manual for the adjustment recommendations too.
