I remember them, I think Motion Perfomance made them for SB Chevy, used with a gear cam drive setup, I have also seen pics of Hemi's with some equal setup. They disappeared as quickly as they came.

Take a look at a modern crank trigger system instead, they work.
Here is one example, there are many suppliers:
MSD Universal Crank Trigger Kit

Josh & I talked about one that mounts to the front of the cam on a BMW.

Maybe Josh remembers what the specifics were. :D

You are thinking of the old flathead, one style was a barrel with two caps other style was single cap crab style.

MSD also makes a universal front drive distributor setup like Jesel. You can use either one and modify the timing cover to drive it straight off the end of the cam, instead of the belt system they use. Works good, but you still need to drive the oil pump somehow.

The BMW distributors are really short. I was just thinking it would be easy to rig one up with a belt drive off the crank.

Here is a BMW V12 ghetto rigged with a carb and a couple 6 cylinder distributors.

Read more about the V12 Thunderbird and see the pictures.

OH! A crank trigger! I though you were talking about some kind of distributor that mounted on the front of the motor or had a crankshaft.

D'oh. I'll go sit in the corner now. Image

The oil pump drive gear is independent of the distributor. They run off the same gear on the Cam, but have their own driven gears.

Im thinking of the Ford and Chevy inlines that drive the oil pumps with the distributors.

Today's crank trigger set-ups do a better job of delivering timing signals and they a pretty easy to install and adjust, once you have a 120 degree trigger wheel...
For me, the way to more stable timing is to create the signals with-out going thru a timing chain or gears.
Just my 2 cents...

PS: The only cam driven set-up I have seen was on one of Wilford Day's land speed SL6 engines... it was a "home built" cover with BB Mopar (hemi) drive pieces... but I never saw the actual distributor.

DOC.. well let me tell you...

I just got off the phone 1 hr. 10 mins with Wilford Day. the image you posted is his motor but after it was sold to Bob Stepp out in calif., the item on the front he mod.

so... let me begin,
Wilford Day is now 78 and i ask as many questions as I could think.
He worked for Cullaga water treatment company and started racing their family 1953 and a 1955 olds 88 @ bonneville, running 125mph average speed. then he went with a 1957 Plymouth Fury running 127mph, then 1958 running 128mph.
He ordered a NEW 1964 Baracuda slant six /4 speed with a formula "S" subspention package w/ AC !!! factory Goodyear nylon tread tires. He desided to build a motor as a family project... w/ 3 sons I think he said. He purchased a slant six built by Dragmaster out of Calif. They had it built up from the factory. cam/ported/fuel injected/headers drag car...but an automatic ...no low end power..well Mr. Wilford Day said he picked the engine up without any exhaust or the injectors, and the factroy/Dragmaster was now full tilt bore with Ramchargers HP V-8 products.

Mr. Wilford Day ran Hyperpack headers/intake and a AFB carb he bought used. He bored the motor .60 over making it a 227 and that was the number he ran on the car..1964 Baracuda with factory 4 speed/AC. he said it ran OK but that he checked the carb and the used carb had small secondaries from the previous owner trying to get good gas milage. He quickley fixed that. They would swap out the motor 2 weeks b4 Bonnieville, camp out in town as all the motels were booked 1 year in advance. He could only race on weekends as he worked during the week. He got the NEW 1964 Baracuda to run 145 mph and said it handles xcellent @ 145 mph. I asked him if he ever had the radio on during the run and he stated "ALL BUSINESS" open headers/roll bar. he later desided to build a decaded race car a 1961 lancer, sedan med blue in color ran 170 motor bored out to 175 and that was the number on the car / ran 134mph. He is now building a tribute to the lancer a 1962 GT.HT..peal white
oh and one more thing...that 1964 Baracuda slant six 4 speed factory car would get 28mpg !
ps he ran a Mallory mini magneto in the stock position..they made them back in the day for slants.

Jon,

Did you happen to mention there is a '66 Barracuda under construction for Bonneville?
I would like to talk to Wilford if he has the time and inclination.
