: How do I tell the difference between a Holly
: 1945 and a 1645? You mean a 6145. The 6145 is used with the O2 feedback system. Usually only found on California slant 6 cars and trucks. If you have the O2 system you should find a O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold outlet on the rear side. The O2 carburetor will have about 4 wires coming from it, 2 going to the top of the carburetor (where the mixture control solenoid is located, and another 2 wires - one of which goes to the throttle kicker solenoid and the other to the curb idle ground switch. The 1945 carb will only have the 2 wires --- those going to the throttle kicker and the curb idle ground switch.

The ESA computer controls the ignition timing (and fuel ratio if you have the O2 system) If the computer is disabled or has some of the sensors disconnected then the engine will only run with fixed spark advance and will have poor performance and fuel mileage. Has someone installed a distributor with mechanical and vacuuum advance???? And a ECU and wiring from a older vehicle?

How do I tell the difference between a Holly 1945 and a 1645? I have a 1985 Dodge Ram with a slant six. The ESC has all been disabled. Can I use a Carburetor from an earlier model? I looked up Carbs from 85 and from 80. The ones from 80 seem to be about 50 dollars cheaper. Why? Thanks, Patrick

The ones : from 80 seem to be about 50 dollars cheaper. : Why? : : Thanks, : Patrick Patrick, I can't tell you the difference between a 1945 and a 1645 or why the later carbs cost more but I can tell you that I have a truck like yours and I replaced the original carb with a Holley 1920 (from a '69 Satellite) and later a 1945 (from a '76 Volare). The truck ran better with either of these carbs than with the orig. carb (whatever that was). The 1920 and 1945 have adjustable idle circiuts, which really helped my truck. As I recall, I had to slightly reroute the fuel line for the older style carbs but the stock throttle cable and kickdown linkage hooked right up with no problem. Ron rheying@pacifier.com

Hey Ron, So do you have any Idea what these numbers mean? 6R above 4360 above B. I'm guessing it is a Holly carb. The guy at Napa wanted to know the Model. Thanks Patrick

Seems like the Napa guy should be able to figure out what it is from those. My original carb was a Holley and I replaced it with an old Holley 1920 that I already had. Later I replaced the 1920 with a 1945 that I had. I'll take a look at my original carb tonight and see what codes are on it. Ron rheying@pacifier.com
