You can use Dutra duals on your engine. I have Dutra Duals on my '78 Volare's 225 /6. A pipe off of each manifold goes into a Y-pipe, and then one pipe out the back.

Howdy Boys,great bbs.Have 82' D-150 /6,Miser lean burn.Got exhaust leak again,probably cracked manifold.I'd like to know if Dutra duals would work on this truck.There is a cat convtr. mouned to the outlet of the manifold that must remain to pass smog.Can Doc's manifold work on this set up? Also anyone else with this motor have any good tips for me on any other subjects? TIA rjager@sonniksonstordahl.com |

Well, Dutra Duals do not have a Carb approval number so they are not legal for use in Calif. on 1972 and newer vehicles. As for passing California smog, yes, I have "passed smog" with a couple of later cars running the duals. What surprized me is that one of the cars had dual exhaust pipes and when the system came-up and asked: "Dual Exhaust" the mechanic entered "yes" and the machined continued the test even though no SL6 ever came from the factory with Duals.  The smog machine tested one pipe, stopped, directed the mechanic to move the "sniffer" to the other pipe and finished the test and passed the car.  I guess the smog police are more concerned with the smog readings & leave the equipment check up to a "visual" by the mechanic. If you do this set-up on a Calif. vehicle it would be a good idea to run the pipes two into one so it looks factory. DD |

As far as I understand CA testing, they don't care about the exhaust configuration at all, unless the car originally came with cat converters. I passed my '68 with a header and two shops said it didn't matter. Only the induction side is critical, along with spark, etc... Oh, whoops, you were asking about an '82, OK that's diff'rent. Lou |

My 85 D150 passed the Houston Area emissions test with a non original catalytic converter. I put one on from a Ford 300 six and the air pump tube was welded to the engine pipe below the manifold , like on earlier models. This is legal in most states. Most muffler shops around here Install universal catalytic converters. That ugly thing just below your exhaust manifold must generate a lot of heat and other problems. I would get rid of it. Check with a local muffler to see if you can use a different type catalytic converter further away from the exhaust manifold. Good Luck! D150ram |
