It will help if you specify more desires for the car, and your budget constraints. There are a million answers to the questions as you have stated them. For ex, do you mind steep axle ratio (high revs on highway)? It will be difficult to do any real performance upgrades and be sure you can have the car running again in 1-2 days, but it's possible. A big thing to make the car faster is weight reduction. Also, high-stall torque converter, bigger carb on Offy or Clifford 4bbl intake.... Cheers, Lou |

Super Six Lower Gearing Advance the timing Anti Sway Bars I think you need to pick something like recurving the distributor to "get your feet wet" and you will have some new questions once you get started. (I think you already asked this question before http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4379 DD |

I don't think you can go from stock to 200 hp with only 2 days of downtime unless you already have a built-up motor ready to drop in. Here's my suggestion... but it's expensive: headers, 4-bbl intake, Edelbrock 500 or Holley 390 carb, MP electronic ignition. This won't get you even close to 200 hp but it will make a huge improvement in overall power and throttle response. It will probably "feel" like 200 hp. And you can easily do all of these mods in 2 days or less. Ron |

the first thing I did to the stock one barrel six was a super six swap this alone made a huge difference in "seat of the pants" performance. Just make sure you have a well built carb when you do the swap (a carb desperately in need of a rebuild seems to be the biggest problem that people run into once they make the swap). So here's a basic grocery list , super six manifolds (exhaust not necessary if you plan on using a manual choke) , carb , air cleaner , all linkage to trans (including the lever on the trans itself from the donor car) , new manifold gaskets and carb kit. simple swap to make and an afternoon's work if your lazy about it you should have electronic ignition in your 74 , perhaps as "Doc" suggests , you should start with some simple tweaks to get your feet wet mechanically. Perform this swap , then hang around and decide what to do next. If your really looking to get some power out of your slant , you might want to get an engine from a wrecker , an engine stand , and build it over time using various tips and tricks from the board. That way you can take your time to do things right , and when it's ready to go in , it's a weekend worth of work |
