I am getting ready to drop the engine into my Barracuda, and I did a quality check of all the fastners. Thats when I noticed that a piece of the rubber gasket in the front of the oil pan near the timing cover is bulging out about 1/4 inch. I spent time installing it the best I could, and I am not sure why it is bulging.

My question is do I need to pull the pan off and redo the gasket, or is there an acceptable tolerance for exposed oil pan gaskets sticking out?

I do not want to install the gasket after I drop the engine into the car next week. I don't really want to redo the gasket either way  . Please help.

Only you know how this went together, if there is no "path" for the oil, then no leaks.

I tend to glue the rubber parts down with weather strip glue, that keeps them where you want them. Silicon sealer works nice but it's pretty slippery stuff and will let the gasket slip around.

Here some info:

When I have had a small seep on a new gasket, I have had good success putting on a thick layer of UltraBlue over the top of the leak and letting it dry overnight (let engine cool and clean leaky spot thoroughly). This assumes you are not building much pressure in the crankcase. A little bulging out is probably still OK, or you can seal it up this way.

A Slant is just like a Harley. If it ain't leakin' oil, it's empty.

:)

I've installed two new oilpan gaskets from the Fel-pro kit recently, one for my Feather Duster and one on my temporary slant for my 74 Duster RoadOiler... In both cases the gasket didn't want to seal so well around the area where the "big diamond" shapes sit between the pan and the block. A friend gave me a tube of GM Goodwrench Sealant that is an Anaerobic Sealer (stays "soft" where there is a lack of Air....), and I used this in the sections that had airgaps. sofar I've had no leaks of any kind on my pan gaskets. The sealer hardens up on the outer edges where air contact is, but on the oil soaked inner surface it stays pliable so it can seal if a gap occurs. So far out of 4 oil changes on my Feather Duster I've seen no evidence of any of this sealant getting loose in the oil system either.

Food for thought,

Thanks for the great information. I have to do it right, and I will be pulling the pan off and re-sealing. The information that you have given me is a big help, and I really appreciate the help.

I'll post when I get a chance to check for leaks and let you know how it turns out.

Thanks again.
