What color should my engine be? I have a 1965 Dodge Dart, with a Slant Six, 225. It is currently painted plymouth blue, but we don't believe that that it is right, However, under the seals it is red, and this is NOT the original engine, so we are really clueless! I know Red is the correct color, but I kinda like orange. Chevy Orange is a good-looking color paint. M/P orange is kinda crappy, so I just get Chevy Orange. It has more pigment, and is easier to find. |

I got it at Canadian tire. It was about 7 bucks for 1 spray can. I would imagine place like autozone or maybe even walmart in the states would sell it. |

I'm going to paint mine Hemi Orange. If you want a great looking job, check out POR-15's line of engine paints. They can be brushed or sprayed on and I'm told they hold up well. www.por-15.com |

The thing about HemiOrange, at least as far Mopar Performance paints go, is there's very little pigment in the paint. So it takes a lot of paint to cover any thing. If you could take that color and have it duplicated at a Ditzler, or DuPont store and get a pint or a qt., that would be a better situation. |

I tried to paint my engine with a can of MP Red that I got from a Chrysler dealer. Like bud said it didn't have a lot of pigment and didn’t' cover very well. I thought it might have been that the can was really old. I ended up using the basic red engine paint from Duplicolor. It looked really good when I put it on. It’s been a couple of years and it is showing its age. I have had problems with dirt and stuff heating into the paint. It also tends to stain. (Do not use Calix manifold dressing on your manifold). I live in Florida an am thinking that it was probably pretty humid and rainy at the time of year I painted it. So it might not have cured properly. My friend at the body shop says it is probably because they don't put a hardener in rattle can paint. Plus I put it on pretty thick. If I do it again I will probably use the POR15 engine paint. I did my trunk and floorboards with the standard black stuff and it came our really nice. I would also use their manifold paint. John |
