Post subject: Engine miss when braking
PostPosted: Sat Nov 09, 2002 10:36 pm
Volare 79 auto power brakes. When idling if I press the brake pedal the engine misses as if it there is a vacuum leak. That is, press the brake pedal engine goes pft pft pft for a few seconds but then recovers to normal idling even if the brake continues to be applied. Press it again and engine misses..
What do I look for to correct this faillure?

Rafa

I would suspect a problem with the vacuum check valve

Perhaps a leak in the vacuum diaphragm.

The brake booster uses engine vaccum. There's probably a leak in it somewhere.

I would guess that the Power Booster is leaking, or the check valve is stuck open.
Both are pretty easy to check, see if the booster holds a vacuum.

Thanks guys. You all seem to agree on your diagnosis.
I'll check it out and let you know what I find out.

It's the booster probablly, maybe the check valve. Get a check valve at the local NAPA, they're cheap. If that isn't it, the booster is toast. You can hear them hiss somtimes.

Again thank you all for your quick replies. I'm sorry I could not get back to you sooner but couple of business trips kept me from getting my hands on the Volare, plus another problem, this time electrical, which I was not prepared to deal with. Engine just quit running at a stop light never to be able to come to life again, so I had to take to the mechanic to fix while I was away. Anyway... I found the leak. It was actually the hose to the booster what was dry and did not seal well on one of its ends.
Thank you elam for suggesting NAPA for the required part, but, :) he he, there are no NAPA, Pep Boys, AutoZone or any of this type of auto parts stores this side of Rio Grande. Guess a new check valve will have to wait until my next trip to the USA.

Well, I'm a lucky guyafter all. Damage to a shipment of products  the company I work for took me for a quick trip to the Mexico/USA border at Laredo, TX during the weekend. 8) Of course I visited :D NAPA and PeP Boys and found one, only one, booster check valve which I will install next week end, if and when I the electrical problem I mentioned before gets solved.

Thanks Chuck for your idea of having someone send a unit to me, but I think we might run into some sort of lengthy red tape with mexican customs

Hi Chuck. Yes I will need help with the electrical issues I'm having. Thanks.
Unfortunately heavy workloads at work are not letting me give some time to the car. It's been parked for a couple of weeks now.
I will have some time this weekend and try again. I have changed distributor, ign. module, ballast resistor, plug wires and starter relay to no avail. Ohm testing of coil shows ok but I'll change it sunday anyway.
There is enough gas, float level is per specs -1/4" from crown of floats to top of bowl- Carter BBD, but plugs are black with a velvety soft coat of carbon, -not a crust- which makes me believe it's firing off a weak spark

Will see what I can come up with sunday.

Rafa
