| Post subject: | A-Body Brakes |
I read in another post that B-body brakes will work on an A-body. I am new to all of this . I just bought a 1962 Valiant. I would like to improve the brakes. I have access to a 1985 and a 1987 Chrysler New Yorker. Are these cars b-bodys? If not, can someone tell me what models are considered b-bodys? |

I believe the last b-bodies were the '79 300, Cordoba, Magnum, Fury, Coronet. |

The cars you're looking at are M-bodies. The brakes on this car can be adapted to your Valiant; you will want the spindles as well as the brakes from the donor car. You will want to buy new replacement ball joints of the same style used on the donor car. You will also need upper control arms. The ones from an M-body may or may not work, but a safe bet would be ones from a '73-'76 A-body (Dart, Valiant, Duster, or Scamp for those years). You will also need an appropriate master cylinder and brake lines. My preference would be to convert to a dual line master cylinder from a '73-'76 A body as this will bolt right in. I'm running this along with lines and a combo valve taken from a junked A body of some sort, and a Summit adjustable proportioning valve plumbed into the line to the rear brakes. The B-body setup that I think you are describing is the one that's often considered "the" setup to have on A-bodies - at least comparable to the good quality aftermarket setups. It uses the brakes off a '75-'81 B or R body. The rotors and caliper brackets can bolt right onto the M body spindles, so you can upgrade if you put on the brakes from the donor cars you're considering. Thanks for the info. This greatly clears up the brake installation. I'm still aways off for needing to do this. I just wanted to get the parts while I can get them at a really good price. |
