Stoopid me. Zilla was right. Long story short. Swapping stock piggie motor for hopped up Demon motor. Going to use auto trans in Piggie till Clay City is over then it goes into the Demon behind the stocker. The 4spd in the Demon then will get rebuilt and Piggie will eventually become a stick car.

Things were going very well untill we discovered the Demon motor must have an early crank. Torque converter in the 73 904 wont go in. $#!+

Will an early converter work in this situation? Anyone have a stock one layin' around? Big D said I couldn't leave well enough alone - he was right.

Please give advice but take it easy on the goober (me)!

Early converter will fit the crank. Will also need early flexplate. What trans do you plan on using?
Early trans will just bolt up, late trans will not. You would need to change the front section of the late trans to the early parts.

Thanks for responding Charrlie! Head 1975 - block I think is the same - crank early. This combo was fitted up to a stick. Maybe that is why the crank was not a problem. The 75 crank prolly forged was most likely saved for an automatic app. 904 is circa 1973. Any and all advice welcome - cept for Mater. :P

Yep...got an early crank...just change to an early flywheel...got a late crank...just change to a 1968 flywheel....

Swapping engines on a manual tranny sure isn't much fun...

WV
are you needing an early tranny and torque converter/ flex plate?
when I brought the 66 slant motor from Ann Arbor I left the 904 with you,, I thought there was a torque converter with it,, I can get the flex plate off the motor if you need it..

good luck
DT

DT - I marked the tranny 66 with a sharpie. No converter I double checked. Anyone have a stock converter collecting dust?

hello wayne. i might have one, i have the trans that came off my 67 in the shed, not sure about the converter/flex plate. worked fine when pulled around 15 years ago, kept in cold storage. will look tomorrow. if i have it, you're welcome to have trans and all. i think its a short tail shaft version.

Thanks Andy! I think 67 is the last year for the small crank register. You may have saved the day. I will wait for your post.

Wait, WHY did you pull apart a running car before you get it to the track for the first time?? This must be a sickness that Mater and Cookie share. Zilla must be annoyed...

Annoyed isn't the word I'm thinking of...........

Give a fool a ride and he gets where he's going once.

Give a fool a car and he tears it all apart.

I almost typed "angry." I can only imagine how I would feel.

I am beginning to think that neither Rob nor Wayne will have racecars at a Slant 6 race for the rest of this year. Maybe my bounty is safe?? Maybe someone will collect my bounty at Bristol this weekend? Enquiring minds want to know...

Buying someone else's street car and coming to a race with it does not count, at least for my bounty. If you substantially built (or helped build) the street car, then fine.

Naw, not angry. I gave the car away, he can do with it as he pleases, no matter how dumb it is.

Remember Lou, he's just getting started here. We made dumb mistakes when we were just starting too. :D

And Wayne, IF you put a stock converter behind that Davis motor you will be so disappointed you'll want to scrap the car. It will be an untunable pig that won't get out of it's own way. Go ahead, ask me how I know this.

Come up to the shop and get the '80 motor I used to have in there. It's all stock and will do nicely until you can afford to do things the right way. Then you can just use a late trans/converter and be done. :D

I've been there with the stock converter on a built motor too, more than once - sucks bigtime.

Charlie Schmid had a source recently in FL for a converter retrofit lthat was relatively cheap wiith the small/early snout and large/late splines, and maybe even stall increase????

Post subject:  Now you know why it's called Pinhead Racing.....

Dang Lou didn't mean ta make ya angry! Just breathe - I promise the sun will come up in the east tomorrow morning!

Only a few months ago I never had an A-Body. Now there are two sitting in the drive. This is a case of too much too fast and trying to make progress on two cars.

What some of you may not know is that there is a 2800 stall sitting in the garage at this moment. Some guy from Kentucky was kind enough to loan it to me. So if the 75 head that sits on the 75 block still had a 75 freakin' crank in it - the car would be running as we speak. 2800 may not be the optimum stall for this combo - but it was what I could do. Came very close and failed.

Not exactly giving up however- this has been a crazy roller coaster ride so far. I never would have predicted Big D would give me his car let alone borrow a lot of nice parts. Wasn't expecting my wife to agree to Chase's Demon either. I am not exactly happy with where I am currently but it's been a lot of fun tryin' ta get there.
