The brake pedal push rod is stuck into the rear assembly of my old master cylinder and I cant get it out. They don't sell masters with push rods attached, what do I do?

Hold pushrod in a vice and pull hard on master cylinder.

The pushrod is "locked" into the master cylinder by a special rubber bushing- it looks kinda like a short piece of vac hose with lengthwise grooves cut into it. So you rip the pushrod out of the old master, fit the new bushing into the new master (it did come with a new bushing, didn't it?), then snap the pushrod into place.

Thanks! I tried pulling with a vice, and it was so stuck, I had to use a hack saw and cut it out! Now all is well.

Next time, easiest method is before you unbolt the MS, unbolt the light switch & move aside and then pull on the pedal until rod pops out.

A hacksaw?! Saints preserve us!

This is kind of a ready…FIRE!…aim… deal. Asking here before breaking out the implements of destruction would've saved you aggravation and money.

File this away: remove the pushrod before removing the master cylinder from the car. You take off all four nuts holding it to the firewall, pull it forward (which will move the brake pedal to the floor), put a chunk of wood or similar between the master cylinder and the firewall, go in the car and give a stiff pull upward on the brake pedal. Pop goes the pushrod, still attached to the pivot at the top of the brake pedal arm. Nice to have a helper to grab the master cylinder when it wants to fall away from the firewall.

I have been known to put a master cylinder w/pushrod on the firewall and loosely put the pivot bolt thru the pushrod to use this method rather than hunt up a slide hammer and mess with the vise.
