Post subject:  Simple turbo build

Hey guys
i have recently got my 69 dart road worthy. all the brakes are new, new gas tank and carburetor, etc. all the good stuff and it passed inspection. The only problem is that id like to give it a little more get up and go. some power. I dont mean little things to gain 2 hp. i would ike to be making at least 200hp (to the crank). And with some research i think the best way is a turbo.

this is kind of a budget build. I want to keep everything very simple and basic. I was planning on picking up an old turbo and exhaust manifold and getting them fabricated so they can work together I think about 9ish pounds of boost. then put piping from the turbo directly to a blowthrough holley 500 cfm carb. no intercooler. no blow off valve. I have a 2bbl intake now so id get the offy instead.

Does this seem like a decent build. Is 9 psi too much or too little. Thanks for the tips

If you have 9" drum brakes you're already at the limits of the brakes with a good stock 225. In other words, if you upgrade the power you will need to upgrade the brakes in order to maintain safety. You really also need to upgrade the suspension, wheels and tires also.

A simple turbo may not get you what you want in terms of power or reliability. There are many good reasons, aside from emissions, that only a handful of carbureted turbo cars were built by the major manufacturers. Electronic controls made huge improvements in performance and reliability.

What is your plan for detonation control? What is your plan for boost enrichment?

Forabodiesonly has a whole forum for blown cars. There is a "sticky" for the slants that has some good tips.

I love turbo goodies but for your goals it seems like more work than what your goals require. Just wacking some meat off the head to raise the compression ratio and some minor exhaust changes with a mild cam could probably get you pretty close to your 200hp crank mark.

The turbo route certain things you can do reasonably cheap and get away with for example my Honda buddies have good luck with the cheap ebay turbos for the most part, but with anything there is always that chance of failure. The BOV is a cheap enough device to keep that charge from ramming into the throttle blades when they snap shut is not worth cheaping out on considering my first BOV was like 30 bucks on ebay and worked just fine until I upgraded to my current stuff years later. The intercooler is also relatively cheap for it's benefits on ebay but will complicate pipe routing.

Tuning can be much more difficult on the turbo setup vs a hopped up NA motor in most cases. Ultimately if you want a turbo setup to be different and because you like them that's awesome go for it, but if your only going that route for the power gains then 200 crank isn't hard enough to obtain in my opinion for the trouble of the turbo setup and will cost some coin even on the cheap. If you want to drive to Florida with some cash I have a backup motor collecting dust that probably makes 300 crank lol

What would you want for the motor. And I'm guessing it's a turbo?

Also would a supercharger be a better route. Could I just throw on an eaton m90 and a Holley 500cfm blow through carb and be set ?? Is this less expensive and easier. I could get close to 10 pounds out of that I bet. any thoughts??

Casey, How fast do you want to go? That may be a better starting point for you. Both Turbo and Blower are a lot of work, plus lots more to get them running right.

Come to Mason Dixon and talk to Lou Madsen face to face. He will have lots of info for you, and may have his turbo car there too! Plus Tom Kagarise will have his turbo dart there. So come on over.!
