Post subject:  removing idler arm on a slant 6 A body

This topic has to have been covered...

I am trying to remove the idler arm on a 73 Dart with a slant 6.
The only problem is the bolt that holds the idler arm to the frame of the car can't be fully removed because the oil pump is in the way.

If I can't get the bolt out then I can't get the idler arm out.
Please dont tell me I have to raise the engine up to get the bolt out so I can get the idler arm out!

Someone out there has to have faced this before. Does anybody have any tips?

Thanks.

OK... I did a search, and it looks like I have to remove the passenger side motor mount bolt and jakc up the engine. Not what I prefer to do, it seems crazy to have to do this to remove a bolt, but I guess that's what needs to be done. Thanks.

The bolt comes in from the top to prevent it from falling out in case the nut comes off.

You should be able to remove the P/S motor mount bolt and put a jack and block under the pan to raise it enough to get the bolt out and back in.

I actually replaced the idler arm bolt on the beater valiant, put it in upside down, installed the nut, marked it, then drilled it through for a cotter pin so it wouldn't fall out later...

,but I also did it while the engine was out of the car! :D

Cut the head of the bolt off with a whiz wheel. Install a new bolt bottoms-up using a locking nut. It ain't easy, but jacking the engine around can open many new worm cans. That's my lazy way. :?
