I have a 1987 D150 with what I think is the last year for Slant 6 In pickups. Only has 66,000 miles. Trans has problems and since I'm down there I was thinking maybe a 4 speed manual trans would really help the drivability of this old truck. I know I have to add the clutch pedal and such, but was wondering what trans would be the best to put in? She started life with a A904. I'd like to be able to cruse the highway, but I'm not going to be towing or racing. With all the smog stuff I only have 95HP to begin with. Everything is stock and in great condition except a little rust on the rear quarter wheel wells. I love this old truck and would love to use it as a cruiser to where ever. Thanks SlantSix.org |

After some reading, it looks like I'm looking for a 1975 or later a833 out of a dodge light pickup. I don't need a granny gear as with the a435. Has anyone done this on such a late model truck and are there going to be a lot of problems? I read the "4 speed trans guide" on this forum but don't see a lot of info on trucks. Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated. |

You will need a 1975-1987 Truck A-833OD, bellhousing, flywheel, clutch cover, clutch, fork, forkrod, shifter, shift rods, starter and coverplates for this conversion. Some of the linkage can be discarded if you get a donor with a hydraulic clutch, in which case you will need all the stuff from the pedal to the bellhousing... |

Thanks DusterIdiot. I called the boneyard today and they said $350 for everything! I didn't ask if it had hydraulic clutch, but I will call tomorrow and find out. That would make it so much simpler than rod clutch!!! Is this change going to require a different drive shaft? Can I change it to a floor shifter easily? Thanks again! |

The Hydraulic clutch setup has a lock ring type deal where the master goes into the firewall. Im not sure if that bolts in or is welded in? But you need it to hold the master cylinder in place. That whole set up is not very sturdy. It is pretty flimsy in my opinion, Take a look at it and you will see what I mean. |

Rick, I could make a mounting plate to sturdy up the master cylinder mounting if it needs it. I'll keep that in mind when I put it together. Thanks for the input. |

It does not bolt in. It has a plastic housing that turns in and locks in place with some small tabs if I remember correctly. |

I haven't been able to find one to look at yet, and after talking with the bone yard, all they have is the trans on a shelf. Still looking but after adding everything up it might be better to have the A904 rebuilt. With a new torque converter a complete rebuild is only $450 at the local trans shop. Still trying to decide.... Thanks Rick! |

Too bad you didn't need 833od parts last year. I have a complete set up from a '82 D150, pedals to shifter. I went thru Kingman last Sept, could have delivered them then. |
