working under the front end of 68 barracuda and I just touched the spring clip plate on the driver side front caliper and a portion of the plate popped off, I also included a photo of the passenger side front caliper for reference.

bad clip or do I maybe have these on inside out?
I believe these clips simply prevent caliper rattle and do not actually hold the caliper in place, is that correct?

Well, they actually DO hold the calipers in place. I don't think I ever say a plate break off like that. New ones should be easy enough to get.

Yeah, the big piece keeps the caliper in place on the bracket. The smaller separate piece in the center does the same for the pads. You do have them installed correctly, but that one is very broken.

Not sure if they can be bought individually, but RockAuto has them as part of the "Disc Brake Hardware Kit." Prices anywhere from $3.46 to $8.55 (plus shipping).

Pretty sure I have some extra new ones. Let me know if you need one/two.

Hey guys,
thanks, great info..

I'll remove the driver side wheel-tire
and take a good look at the caliper and caliper bracket
to see if I can find a cause.

It's the metal the new stamped units are made of, I haven't had this happen on old OEM units, but when I've gotten new
one, I order a couple extra sets because this happens... and keep a cleaned up OEM set in the spare parts box in the trunk,
and check the clips when I change the oil and/or get the car out to stretch it's legs.

I agree that is a possible cause, where the part separated, its a clean break
like it was sheared, like the metal is lacking the tensile strength required to with stand the stress.
