That's it, I rebuilt my TRW (looks a lot like a Federal unit) pump this winter, it still leaks, it's hung from a nasty deformed bracket I have tried to rehabilitate with welding & shims, and I've had it with the whole stinking set-up. It's down to dumping in some leak stop in the damn thing and cleaning the garage floor & under battery tray daily, or replacing the whole shoot'en match with something. Looking through Classic Industries Catalog it looks as if the mid 70's slants on up to early 80's used non metric Saginaw pumps with different mounting bracket and hose connections than what is on my 67. These units are a lot cheaper then Federal & TRW pumps. Will same pulley used on TRW work on Saginaw? I'm guessing bracket is different from which TRW pump hangs. Would PS hose adapting to 1967 vintage gear pose a problem, or is there an off the shelf unit? |

I use a 90s Chev PS pump to power my 78 Fury steering box. The Fury hoses threaded into the pump perfectly. Works like you would figure.... |

Change of plan. Too many items to purchase to assemble Saginaw system, costing more than Federal pump. Where I now have a TRW pump, would Federal PS 6157 fit on TRW bracket? Catalogs list Federal pump PS 6157 fitting 1969-76 all six cylinder A bodies. Can't located 1967 and older power steering pump model, or what my car came equipped with from factory. My car has 1968 block, no air, new power steering pressure hose 70329 for 1961- 67 all |

My first 1966 Dart had the Federal power steering pump with the large (1/2" ID) return hose. I swapped in a 318 and made an adapter to mate the 3/8" return hose of the Saginaw pump to the 1/2" hose on the steering box not knowing I could have just changed the return fitting assembly on the steering box. What parts are keeping you from using a Saginaw pump? |

I don't have a Saginaw pump. I have a small TRW pump from what I can gather was common on 1968 and older cars. Where TRW pumps don't seem to be readily available off the shelf. Federal pumps are for '69 and newer and both look to have the same attachment architecture, two bolts to bracket pulley side and a single bolt through the back of tank, I was wondering if those two pumps were interchangeable using my current bracket. After looking at less expensive Saginaw pumps used on later slants, I was thinking finding a bracket, and pulley would be a more economical solution. But I found brackets to be scarce and expensive, as well as needing a difference pulley easy to find, but expensive. So I find my self in power steering pump hell with no quick, easy, or inexpensive way out. I did locate a used Saginaw pump with bracket & pulley an hour or so ago. Perhaps I'll get that one, and rebuild or purchase a new pump if necessary. |

A Saginaw pump with it's pulley and bracket don't seem like a tough thing to find, but I may be living in the past. I know I'm living in the West. And now that you mention it I may have confused a TRW pump for a Federal. |

That's OK Josh. I'm a bit frustrated with this PS BS. Just for S & G's I soldered seam around filler neck of TRW pump, and installed a second new "O" ring. I can't tell if it was leaking from tank's "O" ring, seam at neck, from under cap, or other; pulley and shaft was dry. Degeased all contaminated surfaces under hood from oil thrown by air from fan, once tank repair is repainted I'll dump some fluid into tank before installing it while still suspended and see if it leaks . Over night a good sized oil puddle would form on floor under PS pump. At first I suspected motor oil leak from timing cover R&R, but no oil found along and around cover flange. |

Five days ago I made repairs to tank, cap, and installed a new "O" ring. So far, no big leaks & puddles on floor over night, only a slight oily feel on neck of tank which I now think is oil working its way past rubber seal of cap; vent hole in cap is open. What is the proper fluid level in tank? Currently fluid level is just below crimp at base of neck. |

I'm glad to hear you've stopped the leakage. I thought my old pump had a dipstick in the cap, but that may be apocryphal. Seems to me the full level was about 2" down from the top of the neck, maybe a little lower. |
