Towed the 68 Barracuda from Indy to Wilksboro NC with the 83 D150
this past weekend, below are some of my thoughts from that trip.

D150 empty weighs 4100 Lbs, add 600 Lbs for passengers, tools, gear
Aluminum trailer weighs 1200 Lbs
68 Barracuda, with the interior removed weighs, and this is a guess 2800 Lbs

the 83 D150 has 30,000 miles on it since I did the frame off rebuild. I am through the initial
issues and the truck is reliable. Ran flawless out and back.
AC works fine, Thanks Charlie S for the AC tips, interior is quiet, little wind noise, radio sounds great

the motor has .030 OS stock pistons, OS valves, dual Dutra's, cam is 212 / 206 @ .050, HEI ignition
Holly 2280 carb
A833 OD tranny and 3.73 rear gears

over the 1100 miles the truck averaged 14.45 mpg
on the relatively flat lands of IN and OH the mileage was in the low 15's
on the hill country of Virginia and NC the mileage was in the mid 13's
I think that is actually pretty good, when the truck is not towing, I can
get high 19's to low 20's on the highway.

I have Air Lift air bags in the rear, a stabilizer bar in the front and a Tekonsha brake controller.
No issues with the handling or braking.

What was an issue is on the way out to Wilksboro, on the hilly sections of I-77 and on the way back to Indy
on the up grades on 421 and 321, there were times when I got down as low as second gear, the motor spinning at
2500 RPM and the vehicle moving at 35 mph.
Even then the truck never over heated or acted badly, it just did not have the power to pull those grades at a
normal speed.

On the other sections of the trip I could set the cruse control on 65 and motor down the highway.
Occasionally I would need to down shift out of OD to third on a grade, but I could maintain crusing speed.

So the 83 D150 does fine as a tow vehicle, between the Smokey and the Rocky Mountains.
But for tows into those sections of the country, I will need an alternative.

That is good mileage towing for sure. I got between 11.6 and 14.1 with the Tahoe.

I am right with you on the mountains. I love my truck and would keep it except for I can't tow at a reasonable pace for me in the mountains. With the Tahoe, I came up that mountain on I77 at 65, with quiet comfort and good A/C blowing in my face. :D :D

Towing capability is the #1 reason my /6 '74 D100 Club Cab was replaced by a 318 powered '72 B300. I rebuilt a 318 for the D100, but then found the 1-ton van which received said 318. The B300 had 4.10 gears and got 11 MPG at best, but it would tow up a grade. My 2.5 liter 2015 Nissan Frontier would out tow the stock /6 in my D100.

John, your results, are what I have been thinking I will have with my D-100. I am thinking about a turbo install over the winter. Just about 4-6 lbs, to be able to pull the hills. Shouldn't hurt reliability, or mileage.

Turbo and EFI on on the agenda for my 76 D100. As much as I love the slant, it just doesn't have the power in stock form for towing anything up a hill much bigger than a 4x8 utility trailer.

Back in the day (what the heck does that mean anyway???) I would flat tow my 1970 Challenger and then my 64 and then 67 Barracudas with my 74 Dodge Van. I had the Challenger push me through a wet intersection one time, but other than that it worked. I would not recommend it though, I was a professional amateur back then!

Way back when (about 1964) I flat towed a 1963 Galaxie about 500 miles, with a 64 Dodge Dart 170 slant six. How stupid was that?

I've towed two different vehicles on a dolly with my '83 D150. A Kia Rio for between 150 and 200 miles and a 4x4 Kia Sportage for around 80 miles. It struggled a little with the Sportage, but there are some major hills here in SW PA. The truck is a bone stock \6 with Holley 1945 and auto transmission. No idea on the rear gears. I figured the motor would be fine, but I did worry a little about the transmission.

Honestly, I thought it did OK for what it is. But, I used to tow vehicles frequently with a junky old 2.8 v6 5 speed Chevy S10 Blazer, so I'm used to slowing down for hills. I can't imagine why the 2.8 died early. :mrgreen: They didn't usually hold up well to start with.

I'll be a lot better off once I get the drive train back in my F250.

My eventual plan (dream) is to replace the wheezy 360 in my 1989 B350 van with a 225 on 6 psi. The 225 would make plenty more power. We'll see if I ever have time for that...

I used to tow my 62 Valiant super gas car with my 62 Signet. The trailer weighed 700# and the race car 2,200# and the Signet loaded might have been 3,200#. It actually towed pretty well with a 3.55 three speed and a stock 225, no mountain grades though.

225 Slant 6 on 6 psi makes around 270 HP in my 68 Dart. 6 squared sounds good.
