Post subject:  7 1/4 Yoke Question

I don't have one around, need to know if the yoke has the little locating tabs, or uses c-clips on the u-joint to locate the driveshaft in the center.
I purchased a shaft from a member a few years ago with the ball and trunion elimnation kit, slip yoke and 4 bolt flange.
I thought it was for an early 4 door A.
No c-clips on the joint so I think the rear u-joint is a 1310 joint, not an 7260 or 7290.
No sure right now what was do wrong on the shaft or it's me.

All the 7 1/4" yokes I have seen use the 7260 joint with inner clips.
It's fresh in my mind considering the axle and driveshaft work I have been doing recently on my 65 Valiant.

Thank you, that is what I remember, I don't remember seeing the little tabs. I do rememeber c-clips.
But I have neither.

I did find a good resource on the interweb:http://www.driveshaftspecialist.com/PinionYoke/PinionYoke.html

So you're saying there are no inner clips on the U-joint on the rear of this shaft, even where it connects to the shaft itself? Do the caps on the shaft side use outer clips instead? If so, maybe they converted the rear of the shaft as well.

Since the original rear U-joint would've been a 7260, I'd have to wonder if someone did the front conversion with a 1310 and mistakenly assumed the caps were interchangeable. The 1310 caps are sightly smaller, but close enough that you might not notice during assembly (1.062" vs. 1.078"). You might want to check for any radial play on the shaft side. I just went through this issue on the yoke side after a rear axle swap.

Hi Frank. 62 Lancer Wagon, Slant, 904 Pushbutton. I purchased a driveshaft off the forum a few years ago. It is new and I thought it was a bolt in for an early A. I knew I had to shorten it for the 8 3/4 conversion I did.

I just got off the phone with Driveshaft Specialist in San Antonio. What I have is a 7290 rear DS yoke with some kind of conversion joint. Like a 7290 to 1310 or 1330. Then the yoke on the pinion has been drilled out to use u-bolts or a girdle. I do not have those parts. I never looked at that part of the rear. It's a 741 housing so I can remove the yoke without disturbing the gear set.

I am shipping the driveshaft to them, they will shorten it 2+ inches, replace the joint with a 7290 and sell me the correct yoke for the 8 3/4 and a 7290 joint. $imple $olution to my problem. I never said I was smart.

Thanks to everyone for the help!
