i have an A108 van. had the single field style alt give up. took it to the local rebuilder. i got back the dual field case that had been modified for a single field use. i have had them b4 and never had trouble. i still use the mechanical style regulator because i am not sure what to do to use the smaller electronics types. and the electronic types just pop when just plugged in. after the alt swap, the old regulator(which had been temperamental for a while) gave out too. when i changed that all was right with the world for a few days. then the dash ammeter started to peg to full charge when i got it off idle. my VOM registers 17V and more, but not past 18V. at idle, it settles down to the upper 12V range. had the battery tested thinking an internal short mite pull that current thru the reg. battery tests ok. so i assumed i had a faulty reg and bit the bullet and got another one. the issue continues. i don't see any voltage leaks. battery stays charged till the next time i want to start it up. the reg appears functional in that i seem to be getting DC to the battery. the VOM showing up to 18V tells me the alt is doing what it is designed to do. i have traced the wires between the reg and the alt. i find no shorts or grounds. and they are connected properly to the correct terminals. what am i missing? |

If you have high resistance in the wiring to the voltage regulator that voltage will be low and the regulator will crank out more field current to get the voltage up. Check the voltage at the regulator IGN terminal. It should be within 0.1V of battery. If not you'll have to check all the wiring to the regulator IGN terminal. Make sure the grounding of the regulator, alternator and engine are all good. |

Yepp^^^.....check that wire and use it to run a headlamp Hi beam, should be bright and as stated above, close to batt V checked at the headlamp term. If it drops a volt or more, You need to repair terminal connections, ign.sw., or wiring failing. |
