Post subject:  and739 A904 Rebuild/Swap for A727

Hey everybody!
Some of y'all may remember a couple years ago when I started my engine build, I received a handful of recommendations to switch from the 727 to a 904 for my project. After getting the engine up and going, I started keeping my eyes open for 904s for sale. Earlier this month I picked up an excellent rebuild candidate from everybody’s friend hyper_pak! Once at home I began cleaning up the exterior and found the stampings on the case flange next to the oil pan; PK3410636A 3176. This tells me it’s a Slant Six 904 built on April 8, 1970. This also means the torque converter snout will fit up to the crank in the existing engine. Not knowing the condition of the trans when it was removed, I’ve decided to perform my first automatic transmission rebuild (hyper_pak said it “would need going through” anyway). I had already acquired and read both the ATSG Repair Manual and Tom Hand’s TorqueFlite book, so I am pretty familiar with the trans and am looking forward to jumping into the rebuild. Youtube also has a bunch of videos on these transmissions and I’ve watched so many I feel as if I’ve been there before. As always, this board is an excellent resource as well and I’ve read everything I can find on the subject here, so thank you all for your past contributions.
My plans don’t include anything fancy or exotic. I’m looking for reliability and at the same time introduce a little pep into the D100 driving experience. I’ll use a rebuild kit that I’ve seen recommended here and a Transgo TF2 kit. I plan to use the stock converter that was still attached to the transmission.
I know I’ll have to lengthen the driveshaft to make up the difference between the 727 and the 904. There is a local driveshaft shop that can reasonably do that for me. I use an aftermarket throttle valve cable that works well. That shouldn’t be a problem adapting to the new transmission. A thing that I am not too sure about is the factory column shifter linkage. Does anybody here have experience with the shift linkage on a swap like this? So far, I haven’t found anything here regarding that question.
Please feel free to offer any advice, potential issues or questions on these or any other subject I haven't mentioned here regarding this rebuild and swap project.
Thanks again!

shifter linkage will bolt right up.

If you were closer, I'd be interested in the 727 as a spare for mine. At this point I'm not interested in getting rid of the the 727 in my truck. But I'm thinking that if I do it'll be for some kind of a stick with OD, whether it be an 833 or a t5. But as long as the 727 lives, it stays.

I would think that if the 904 was out of a car. The transmission mount location might be different as well.

That's a good point, Greg. I thought of that too and did some looking around and found this (on FABO, I think):

I hadn't considered a car and pickup dimensions possibly being different.
I just went out to the garage and measured the 904. It is 22-3/4" to the center of the trans mount bolt holes which are kinda positioned towards the front of the mounting pad. The 23-1/2" appears to be near the middle of the pad. I'll get a close look at the 727 tomorrow.

when I have swapped between 904/727, the mount point was always the same. car or truck. the main difference is tailshaft length and output shaft spline count/diameter between the 2 series of trans

It seems according to the chart you have there, the OD trans's Have the mount moved, but the 727 / 904 share the same location... I must be just thinking of the tail shaft length.... not the mount point.

Good stuff to know.

I set myself an alarm to measure that 727 trans this afternoon. I probably would have forgot otherwise.
Anyway, the 727 measures the same dimension as the 904.

The transmission rebuild is going good overall. I did manage to misplace two thrust washers someplace  . I looked for them everywhere more than once. They may have been thrown away by mistake. Time to move on and order some replacements. Lesson learned. Aside from that, I got the valve body cleaned, modified with the Transgo TF2 kit and reassembled, the pump and both front and rear clutches rebuilt.

I have a couple of questions:
Between the rebuild and shift kits, I now have two transmission oil filters; a felt-covered filter from the rebuild kit, Transgo supplied a wire mesh filter. Is there any benefit of using one over the other?
And when I got it, the 904 did not have the dipstick & tube or a torque converter dust cover. Does anybody know if these pieces from my 727 swap correctly? It looks like they will, but I don't know for sure.
Thanks again for all the help.

Okay, it looks like I got myself all worked up for nothing. It turns out I have all the thrust washers I need. While I was looking online for replacements, I was looking at a different exploded view drawing and noticed this drawing had the same amount of washers as what I have. After work I reassembled the output shaft and checked the endplay in the planetary geardtrain; same measurement as before the first disassembly. Just to double-check I took out the thrust washers and the endplay increased by their their measured thickness. I feel better after that roller-coaster ride.
