I've never worked with nitrous before or driven a car with nitrious, heck, rode in a car with it so forgive the ignorance.

Anyhow, when you press the button to dump the gas into the intake, does it make any peculiar noise, like a puff or hiss?

I'm curious, because I saw a ricer going down the street today, and he left the stopsign as normal, going 15-20mph now, then all of a sudden I hear a puff or two, and I hear the sound of screeching tires. I thought it might of been the tranny shifting but it seemed to last too long for that.

LOL, he probably broke the return spring off his throttle body from all his "phat modz"

The ricers here are really bad. I detest them immensely.

I gotta hand it to them though, they may do some silly/stupid things but man can some of their cars go. I bet they are up there in the power per unit displacment list compared to other engines.

I would much rather have a 2nd gen Mazda RX-7 with a specially built three-rotor engine (something you actually CAN do with rotaries is connect them end to end with some fabrication work) and build it to be a sleeper, with minimum exterior mods. Some lightweight wheels, brakes, quietest exhaust I could get with a good level of performance, low profile spoiler...

Ack I'm ricing myself here

Everyone has their opinions of how they like their power, I'm just saying although quite a few of them are a bit silly, their cars put quite a bit of power to the ground. I rode in a friends 100% stock 4 banger Honda Accord... 2000 I think? Not sure of year but it was recent. Normally aspirated. I was quite impressed, and could have sworn it was a v6 or bigger and made him open the hood for proof. So I could only imagine what those small 4 bangers with legitimate modifications to them can do.

Well the problem with the 4bangers now (in Hondas anyway, these are the only ones I have much knowledge on), is that you really can't squeeze all that much more power out of them without extensive mods. Most of the ricers here just plaster on decals and maybe a cold-air intake and some high performance wires, and of course the ever-present fart can. I've found that you can get pretty good low end pickup on those with just upping the plug gap a tiny bit and playing with the throttle body a bit.

My sis has a '99 Accord and I did just that last time I tuned it up for her, and now she loves driving it. I certainly wouldn't race in it, but it's nice to have a peppy little getaround car. I've got my respect for Japanese vehicles (shoot I drive a Japanese truck and love it to death), but I wouldn't put one on the track against a Cuda or a Charger with a big block.

Now some of those Italian cars, in a distance race, *drool*...

Pierre, you probably heard them purging the NOx line. Clears the air out and guarantees that there's NOx at the solenoid when you hit the switch. Strange that they did this after they rolled away from the stop sign though...

Back in the day, the engineers really over-designed the engines. I look back and wonder what was the point of having a 305 in my Nova if it only rated at 145HP.

Now, metallurgy and engine design are more of a science than an art. They're modelling the engines on computer before they cast the first engine block. Tolerances are tighter. Computers are controlling the engine. The engines are now designed for the target power output at minimum cost. They don't have a lot of extra strength left for souping them up. You can do it; but, longevity suffers badly.

They are making 900hp with a 2.4l. The only parts replaced in the motor are the rods and piston to give more compression.

900hp out of 145ci = 6.2hp per ci

400hp out of 225ci = 1.7hp per ci

145hp out of 305ci = 0.475hp per ci

HHHMMM.

145 hp out of 305 cuin = a waste of energy. Thermodynamic efficiency is horrific. Like I said before, I don't understand what the point was. Why'd they bother? (ok, I know... availability and marketing)

As far as I'm concerned, If you're not getting at least 1hp per cu.in., somethings wrong. (I admit, still got work to do on my /6 -- it's still bone stock and has a (bad) Lean Burn on it)

Aren't we running up against design issues with the stock /6 crank and head that prevents anyone from building a reliable engine over 400hp? :( At that level, isn't it still somewhat reliable? I think I read Doc gets several hundred runs out of his engines!?!

At 6.2hp per cu.in. what's the longevity like? How many runs? How many miles? I couldn't get to the site.

I think that I'd be happy with 170HP out of my 170 Slant.

- my next 3 purchases are a new fuel tank, a sending unit and then a new 2bbl Webber Carb. I was under the car yesterday at the exhaust shop (having the end of the line routed out the side of the car instead of the back, it was sucking too much exhaust) and noticed a HUGE dent in the bottom of the gas tank... Plus I figure that I have about 6 Gal. of muck in there.

Top Fuel 500ci Hemi, about 5000hp. About 10 ponies per cube. Lifespan, 1320 feet.

NASCAR 355 chev, about 750hp. About 2 ponies per cube. Lifespan, maybe 1500 miles.

225 SuperSix, about 110hp. About .5 poines per cube. Lifespan, maybe 250,000 miles.

Everything is relative...

Gotta be more than that on average. I know (or at least I remember reading somewhere) that the record for the slant is 800K miles. I would expect a well maintaned slant to reach 3350K before needing a teardown.

3 million miles? Your kidding, right?
What about this 800k? I'm a bit iffy on it.. maybe 800k on the car yes thats doable, but 800k on a single unrebuilt engine?
