I have a transmission pan leak. I have been told that a cork gasket is better than the rubber gasket. I see gaskets that show A727 but not A904 but is it the same gasket for A904. At Oreilly I see one that is cork with metal carrier and one that is cork rubber. Looking for suggestion as to which one would would be preferred or if there is a higher quality one that would be recommended. thanks Bill

Welcome! 727 gasket is totally different than 904 gasket. They will definitely have 904 gaskets at most if not all parts stores, so not sure why they are not seeing it. It is the same pan as a 42RH or 42RE transmission, which came in late 80s and 90s Dodge trucks and vans. The main thing is to get the pan straight. Cork vs. rubber does not matter much. For extra insurance, get some Permatex ultra blue or black and put thin skins on both sides of the gasket. You can also look up your car on Rockauto.com and get a part number for the gasket, then ask your local store for that part number.

Best of luck,

Lou

Search for Mopar # 4295875AC
That should be the HD, reinforced rubber one for a 904 trans.

Get this one as Matt says and be done with replacing gaskets and leaking - You may need longer screws with this gasket. I am not sure if they are included or not.

I believe the Bolts are 5/16-18 body bolts and should have the captive washers included with them - you just need them to be a 1/4" longer that what is currently on your pan.

While you're in the do the filter service and Band Adjustment. and be sure the pan is straight and true... if not get a new one.

On my quest to get the slushbucket to stop leaking / seeping (especially on a ~58 year old automatic I replace the Speedo Seals, as well as the Dipstick Tube Seal too)
I have less experience on the pushbutton / cable type trans but I suspect the gaskets and seals where the cable enters the trans. could also be a point where fluid tries to escape.

Happy Slanting!
Greg

Thanks also for the tip to check that the transmission pan was straight. It didn't appear that it was so I ordered a new pan also.

By the way what a good article you posted.

Can't say I think very highly of the trans pan you bought, for a few reasons. For one thing, it's unnecessarily expensive—a lot more money than the Chrysler pan in the linked article. For another, it's made out of aluminum. That means if something hard (rock?) hits it under the car, it will want to break instead of just denting like a steel pan. And because it is unnecessarily deep, it is more vulnerable to whatever might be lying in the road waiting to hit it.

If I were in your shoes I'd return it and get the Chrysler pan.

I don't remember for sure, but I don't think the newer pans will work with the 65 and down cable shift trans Seems to me there is a issue with the parking pawl cable housing. Can't go look right now, getting ready for hurricane Ian.

I didn't have difficulty putting the newer pan on my '62.

I didn't remember for sure. The early pan has a small indented/notched area, in the flange, in the vicinity of the park cable housing. The newer style pan does not have this. I just couldn't remember if it was an issue or not.

Appreciate the experienced advice. I have returned the transmission pan and purchased the mopar oil pan - 52118779AD.

I have restored a 64 Valiant and had my shares of issues and don't want any additional uneeded down the road.

The car was my father in laws and had family sentimental value. A few little issues still here and there but now can mostly enjoy.
