I was bored one day....
Image

The picture is a bad one but the display is very readable and clear, in the sun or not. And is backlit for nite time.... The microcontroller board powering the whole thing is dangling by a standoff fixed to the dash. Meh, I didn't feel like doing a fancy install job I just wanted to see the thing function.

Shot of the face of the board if anyone was curious...

sweet!!!

so would you be willing to build one that you'd sell? have you tested it with any others to see if it was at all accurate?

i'd be interested in buying one if you'd ever want to build another ;)

Very very accurate, I tested it with an external precision oscillator and it read dead on, as well with my analog tach. If I set it to update every second, it has a resolution of 20rpm, every 1/2 second, 40 rpm, any faster then 1/2 second imho is overkill. You can get any character availible on a standard keyboard to display on the screen, as well as up to 8 custom defined ones.

Hmm, selling eh... the design is quite simple, most of the hassle is the assembly really. The biggest cost would be the LCD display itself, being $15-20 (maybe more, maybe less, depending on quality and wether you want one line or two of text, and 16, 20, or 40 charachters per line, backlighting or not...). I could use 7 segment displays to make it cheaper, but assembly would be a bit more hassleful. Honestly, I don't think I could sell one, complete, for less then at least $50. At that price, would there still be a market?

That was using my tach output on my msd box. Using it on stock points or factory ignition would probably be doable with more careful filtering, but I have no way of prototyping or testing with stock ignitions because the only running slant car I have, mine, is msd based.

You guys really think so? I'm glad, I thought it was just going to be passed off as something geeky. Yay ;)

Hmm.. visions of an all digital custom dashboard.

That's real cool. Be neat if you could make a housing that'd make it look factory. I'd love a display like that showing mixture % too. Maybe a dual unit :P

Displaying o2 sensor voltage would be almost trivial. The uc has onboard A to D's which makes it a snap. Less then a handful more lines of code and your off to the races. Could make a speedo as well if I attached a sensor to the speedo cable or rig something up so I can get pulses off of the driveline.

You could use one of the electrical adapters that Autometer makes for their electric speedos.

Thats the part I hate... I like making things work, I hate taking the time to make it look good. Next time I have to paint the bundymobile I'm not going to bother with a full blown paint job.. fix the rust, break the rest of the paint down with some #40, and shoot the whole car with truck bedliner or brush on some por15. That autta get some interesting reactions.

We should work together! thats the part I like doing, making things look pretty.
So you could make them and I could do the cosmetic work!
the only trouble is we are a couple of thousend miles from eachother!! :D

Heuh Pierre, would you know by any chance how to make a wig wag system for headlights?? I know they are for sale but "we sell only to law enforcement agency's" really puts a damper on it.
I do have an idea (using two relay's and a hazard flasher) but I don't know if that would work!
would you mind take a look at my electrical drawing and see what you think?
If you will I could e mail the drawing.
Thanks

I'd find it quite annoying if someone was driving behind me like that... is this just for fun offroad on the track or something? Sure, I'll look at your diagram to see if I can make something of it.

I would too! don't worry this is purely for car show purpose, the occasional convoy leader duty (which is fun to do!!) and such
I even gona install an extra set of lights behind the grill aimed very low so i don't distract or blind people in front of me when used on the street.
PS: I'm not an electronical wizard, in fact I'm probably the biggest elctr. morron in the world!
