Went to replace the worn out rear axle bearings in my '62 valiant wagon... only to discover that the oil seals are no longer made. and they're '62 Valiant ONLY. sigh. can anyone recommend a good source for obsolete mopar bearings? thanks-- tim |

Anyone else reading this thread that was not so lucky... I have found replacement bearings and oil seals for obsolete cars and machines at industrial bearing supply houses faster than anywhere else. Most bearings are a standard design, and have tangible measurements that can be matched to existing stock. For instance, the early small rear wheel bearings and the late large ones, will have a design (conventional ball bearings I think, Doc mentioned it once) it will have an ID (inside diameter) OD (outside diameter) and width. Lip seals are the same. Is it single or double lip, what fluid is it retaining, and what is the ID/OD. Most bearings will also have a part number embossed on the outer race that will cross over to a current supplier. Most automakers have the design and production of bearings contracted to global corporations, like TIMKEN, FAG, Chicago Rawhide, and National Seal. Usually CR seals can be identified due to their green color, and National seals are red. Black ones are usually OEM and need to be matched up. I look at bearings and seals the way I look at nuts and bolts, and I have never encountered a bearing in my career I absolutely could not find. I cant think of any US bearing supply companies but some local ones come to mind like B.O.S.S., CB (Canadian Bearings) and CBS Equipment. It just might save you from spending $100 for a NOS bearing that no one will ever see on the finished product anyway. |
