| Post subject: | Has anyone changed the spring perch location? |
I was watching a hot rod show on TV this weekend and saw a Dodge Charger R/T where the guy changed the rear end geometry to accommodate wider wheels. He also shoe-horned a Viper V10 in it as well but that's another subject. The wider tires got me thinking, can the spring perches be moved inward to allow for wider tires? I looked at the rear end on my Scamp and it looks like it could be done relatively easily with some welding or custom brackets for new perchs on the frame. Right now the springs mount just outboard of the frame and they could be moved inboard a good 3 inches. I realize the shocks would be shorter and the geometry is now different which may negatively effect handling. But it would allow wider tires and wheels. Mostly for looks admittedly. BTW I am in the process of retrofitting a 3.23 Aspen posi rear end right now and before I weld on the new perches to the rear axle housing I thought I might consider this idea. Any ideas? Thanks |

This is a very popular modification for A bodies. Mopar Performance even makes a kit to move your springs to the frame. Go to www.bigblockdart.com in their "Tech Stuff" and there's an article with photos. There is also an MP kit to just offset your springs. It's just a small move for some added clearance without as much welding required, but you still have to move the perches. Rob |

Thanks, great resource. Looks like wheel wells might have to be moved as well. I'll have to look tonight when I get home. |
