Worked Slant 6 225ci - Triple SU carbs
30/70 cam (225 @ 050 .283 lift cam)
Chrome tappet cover
Shaved and ported head
Extractors
2.5" exhaust and muffler
3000rpm stall converter
Rebuilt stage 2 push button 904 auto
Trans cooler
Hidden wiring in engine bay
Autometer Monster Tacho with blue shift light
Autometer ultralight water temp and oil pressure gauges

i'm still looking for a good mechanic that i can trust (been messed around by a few mechanics who dont know what they are talking about) so if you know anyone in brisbane that can take care of my baby, let me know. i have also been thinking about changing to either a holley carb or turbo set up. i love the look of the SU's but they are just too much maintenance. also its winter here now so every morning i have to open the bonnet and choke the other two carbs manually while i start hersince they are hooked up to cables.

welcome aboard Jimmy, that's a really neat ride you have there. I'm sure many are drooling over those 3xSU carbs, so if you do decide to ditch them, post them up =) How long have you been working on that car?

More pics, it looks great and congrats.

unfortunaly for another 6 more months i'm still a student, so i dont have much cash to spend on her right now. as soon as i get a real job with some real money she's going to be given the best of everything. i've had her for about 9 months now i think, probably just over. hse has had three previous owners, so alot of the work had already been done for me. i have been doing little things like replacing the radiator, starter motor, cables and hoses etc... i got her for 5000AUSD so thats probably around 3600USD and other than costing me a bucket load in fuel she has been a fun car. i have the feeling that im not getting the power out of her that i should be. somedays she likes to really get up and move it and somedays she gets beaten of the line by my friend in her moms echo.

she does alright. gets 4 kilometers to the litre. i have no idea how to convert that so everyone else can understand it, but by comparison my moms 4x4 prado gets around 11 or 12 to the litre. as i said before im fairly certain im not getting the power i should be. i'd love to be able to take comodores and skylines off the line and put them in thier place. to be honest i have never really put my foot to the floor, but once i get some more work done and get her looked over to make sure shes all healthy then i'll take her to the track and get her timed. unfortunaly she has a few problems right now, due to the mechanic that was jerking me around. i went to them with a dead starter motor. they told me it was fried becuase it was less than a cm away from the extractors, so they took them off, installed a new one, wrapped up the extractors in this hideous heat wrap stuff and gave val (thats what i call her) back to me. i went back a few weeks later becuase i was hearing a clicking noise coming from the engine. when they put the extractors back on they didnt tighten them enough and some of the screws had come loose, causing me to blow a gasket. they agreed to replace the gasket and when they took the extractors back off they broke the new starter motor they had just put on. they replaced the gasket and the starter motor and put the extractors back on and tell me i can pick her up. i go in and they tell me my manifold is warped and they did "the best they could do" to fix it but its still not straight and i have to have it taken off and machined, they also told me my radiator was blocked beyond repair and that i have to get a new one. i'm not an idiot. i wouldnt have gone back ot them if they wernt the ones who had to pay for the new gasket, but they showed me the blockage and i decided to let them put on a new radiator. so now i have my car back but still have to get the manifold machined. these guys were repco authorised and recomended by the RACQ (Royal Automobile Club of Queensland) so i figured they knew what they were talking about. i also got over charged for practically everything that they did. although they did wash my car the first time it went in. i'm sorry but i dont know what kind of extractors they are or how to find out. i thought they were the origional ones, but there is a good chance im wrong. one day i will track down the second owner (the one who did most of the work) and find out exactly what he did.

3.79 liters = 1 gallon

1.609 kilometers = 1 mile

So

4 kilometers / liter = 15.16 kilometers/gallon = 9.42 miles/gallon

That's 25 l/100km, or 9.38 miles per (US) gallon. Absolutely terrible gas mileage! You will want to spend some time tuning those SUs; they are running very, very rich.

i have taken her in twice to two differant mechanics to get the carbs re-tuned, hasnt made a differance either time and they didnt say anything about it running rich. could this be the reason she feels kind of sluggish? i have never had any smoke or other problems with fuel except for when i accidentally used regular in instead of premium. it talked to a friend of mine who does alot of restoration projects and engine rebuilds. her rebuilds hemi's. she had a slant six and said she got similar mileage with the tripple SU's

The poor fuel economy says it for them. Tuning SUs is an art form, it's more than just turning screws and twiddling with linkages. The jetting on your carbs is probably incorrect for the application.

Yep

Improperly tuned carburetors get poor mileage and give poor performance regardless of who owns them.

jimmyA,

at first congrats for your soo cool car. Really great.
at second, will offer you a 2 cents worht comment: I've been tunning, hot rodding, modifying cars for so long that i just forgot when I begun, but, I really do not like SU. We had them in Brasil for a long long time in our Polaras, a Hillmann Avenger with another badge, never work properly and always a junk milleage. If I were you I'd remove them, sell for the very best offer You could get, and install a holley 2 barrel or a small 4 barrel like a 9776 450 cfm or a 390 vacuum secondary.

thank you very much for your input. i have been told by a few people to replace the SU's with a holley carb. do you think i would get a noticeable improvement in power or fuel efficency? i have been told that the SU'd pack quite a punch, but i havent tested her yet to see what kind of times i could get.

The Carbs SU's that equiped this Slant, are called here (in Argentine) Strombergs... we're talking about the same's Carbs?
This Carb's are equiped cars like the DODGE 1500 in my country (in Argentine).

It's a good "curtain" carburetor... what offers different "venturis" a measurement that is changing the acceleration ...
it's necessary to tune it very well, but it is a machine of spending Gas

Check the Pics of this DODGE 1500:
