 Post subject: Rear seal retainer
PostPosted: Sun Nov 25, 2001 10:04 am
Well, I'm actually putting my motor together. The head's done. The spinning parts are balanced and *almost* all of the parts are collected. I was looking thru the stuff and realized I don't have a rear seal retainer. How can this be! Well, I bought most of this at the last Spring Fling. Someone elses aborted project. I guess it didn't make it into the box. Anyway, finally, my question.

Are they all the same? Do any of you guys have one lying around so I don't have to go to Pick-a-part and rip a whole engine apart for one thing?

Mike, I have one laying on the workbench for a steel crank motor. (I think cast and steel are different?) E-mail me if ya want it. Dennis

The seals are the same but the SL6 main seal retainer housing is a different shape so the BB unit will not work on a Slant.

One reason these retainers seem to "get lost" is that they are made of aluminum and if they get put into a "hot tank" for cleaning, they desolve, never to be seen again. Do you have the special bolts? (3/8 - 12 point head)

I have extras....when you get a replacement, be sure to "fit check" it to the empty block, just to be sure the seal aligns correctly. Mock everything up before the crank goes in.

I think I have the ones that go with the retainer. If I do, I'll toss them in the box. Dennis

Hey Mike,

I think I have one in Pasadena. I'll be in back in town tomorrow and if Dennis hasn't already mailed you one, I can look for it if you like.

Still gotta give you a ride in the OD Dart too! NC has been real purty this last week.

Cheers,

Lou

i have several with bolts as well. i see no difference between the cast crank/steel crank reatainers, and have swapped them with no ill effects. i have also seen them with BOTH 3/8 6 point and 12 point bolts!.....chad
