ok, i adjusted the valves today at .10 for intake and .20 for exhaust, it cleared up some of the shaking, but it is still there. any other things i should check? I checked the cap and rotor and they look good, i also checked the carb, looks good, the timing seems to be off, i was fooling with it and it showed a little improvement. what is the recommended timing? sorry for all the questions but it's got me baffled about what is making it shake and not be smooth.

Check the sparkplugs. They might be slightly fouled out and not firing correctly causeing the shaking.

Larry, check the point where your PCV hose enters the manifold. I have seen the passage plugged with carbon in that area, and it will cause the engine to run rough.

i don't have a PCV that goes into the manifold. i have one that goes to the valve cover did you mean that one?

Have you run a compression test? What are the cranking compression readings, cylinder by cylinder? Any low reading cylinders? It could be a burned valve or bad rings.

The other end of the hose goes to either the base of the carb or to a plate between the carb and the manifold. That's where it will plug. For a quick check, pull the hose off the PCV valve and see if you can blow through it.
