i have a 225 in my car but i think the eng was originally a 170. the shop manual says the 225 eng. has a cable throttle lever. i have the linkage style which makes me think maybe it had a 170 c.i. eng to begin with. the 64 dollar question is .....besides the linkage being different are the carbs the same ? or is there a difference in main metering jet size given the displacement size difference of the 2 engines... it runs kinda hot and i've done everything but change the carb....(i had it rebuilt, but the other eng ran hot also. i just got a new one). the plugs look like its running a bit lean and the threads holding the rocker arm for the plunger to the side of the carb are stripped. could use a hand here guys.....thanks

1965 and up should use the linkage style mechanism for the carb. 225 engine used a carb that looked identical to the one employed by the 170, but it was different internally. You can tell the difference by looking at the throttle plate diameter which is cast on the exterior of the carb. 1 9/16 means 170; 1 11/16 means 225, although variations on this did exist. Hope this helps.

Sorry Dude for the Holley info in my previous post. For the Carter, the numbers are the same. Pull out the dial calipers and measure the throttle bore.

All SL6 1 bbls through 1967 had that rod type linkage, except SL6 with AC, those used the cable. The 170 1 bbls had the smaller 1 9/16" throttle "butterfly", the 225s were 1 11/16".

As for the stripped-out hole for the accelerator pump linkage, if I remember right, it is a special "shoulder screw" with a 1/4-20 unc thread, I would put a Helicoil thread repair insert into the stripped hole as a quick fix.

As for the carb. running lean and causing overheating, I would say that is a longshot. I would check-out other possible causes. Have you put a thermometer into the system and checked the accuracy of the guage?

hey guys thanks for the info.....i'll check the carb throat diameter in the daylight. but i'm chucking it ....i got a new holley 1920 from a carb shop for 65 bucks. looks like the carter carb on it was missing the fast idle cam and link. the guy said he wouldn't even take it for a core! believe me ... the old carb looked like it had been through a war.. i'll let you know tomorrow how this new carb works.... this holley even looks like it is a better quality carb.
