I'm one step away from getting the ol' Dart ready for daily use. I had an electrical meltdown at the firewall connector a couple years back and have replaced the engine harness with a junkyard found unit. I've got the car running fine but can't seem to get the headlights to operate. I don't have a repair manual but according the owners manual there's a circuit breaker for the headlights (what was Chrysler thinking?) instead of a fuse. Does anyone know where this circuit breaker is physically located so I can check it out? TIA

The circuit breaker is inside the headlight switch. You may have to get a new/different switch (Year One, Paddock....).

Cheers,

Lou

I got a new headlight switch, for my 66 Cuda, from Advance Auto Parts/Discount Auto Parts.

Be sure to also check the dimmer switch mounted on the floor, I have had these short-out and give me problems.

Charlie,

You may want to put that part number in our parts database.

Okay followup question. Now maybe I'm just a complete bonehead or missing something obvious. How does the switch release from the dash? I have the retaining nut/trim piece unscrewed but can't seem to get the knob off the shaft. To add to my confusion I see an NOS switch on ebay that doesn't appear to have a shaft. Does the shaft come off or the knob?

There is a button on the switch body that you have to push to release the shaft and knob.

Thanks for the quick reply Gary. That explains why I was nearly pulling the switch body thru the dash trying to get the *@#$% knob off!

i recently replaced the headlight switch on a friend's dakota (93?) and it was very similar to the early switch. i think it had an extra terminal for some extra dash lighting, but the main plug was the same. i believe they are interchangeable.

Well it turns out it wasn't the headlight switch after all. After a little troubleshooting of the patch job I did on the drivers side headlight harness it turned out it was the lights themsleves. Apparently when the meltdown occurred it burned out both headlights. Replacement of the bulbs solved the problem. Now on to the inoperative left turn signal...
