I have the traditional style stock muffler on my 67 signet. I am thinking about replacing it with a (Cherry Bomb) Glass Pack style muffler. Are these too loud? Any Pros/Cons? I would like hearing the engine Rpm's while on the HWY.Thanks for any help!

I have a Cherry Bomb Turbo Muffler on my 63 Valiant.

It doesn't have a bad sound when you are driving around, but on the highway it hits this resonant tone that will not stop.....unless you slow down.

It drives me nuts. I will be replacing it as soon as funds allow. Sometimes I pray that the thing will rust out and give me an excuse.

John

Your resonance at highway speeds may be due to the geometry of your exhaust system. Where are your hangers located?
Does your exhaust system include a tail pipe that goes all the way to the rear bumper?
A lot of aftermarket mufflers will be a different length than the stock muffler. If your exhaust system stops at the rear axle and your cherry bomb is cantileavered from the hanger at the end of your system, the frequncy of the exhaust pulses may cause your resonance. Try adding an additional hanger or experiment with different lengths of tail pipe and I think you will see a big difference.

I am basically using the stock hanger locations. I had a 2 inch tailpipe made up using the original as a model.

The pipe going to the muffler is the original.

But, I have patched the section that originally rusted away from the previous muffler with a piece of flex pipe.

It’s been on my list to fix the exhaust, but something always gets in line ahead of it. I mean it does its job.

Thanks,

John

My '64 Valiant had a Glass Pack on it when I bought the car. At most speeds it was okay, but at highway cruise, it had a horrible resonance. I installed a turbo muffler that the shop said should be quieter. They also installed a two inch tailpipe and replaced the stock hangers. It was quieter at most speeds, but it still had a horrible resonance at the same speed as the original muffler.

I then had him install a stock replacement muffler and it too has some resonance, but at least it's bearable. With the two inch tail pipe, it sounds "throaty" during acceleration, but I'd still like to cure the resonance problem at cruise.

I have 6 into 2 headers with 2 1/4 dual exhaust that exits at the rear bumper. From the end of the tranny back the exhaust duplicates v8 duals and I am using 18" long glas paks.

As stated it had a nice deep rumble up to about 2500 rpm and from there up it was an obnoxious blah sound. This past spring I installed an H-pipe cross over right at the end of the tranny and the change in the exhaust note was truely dramatic. The deep rumble up to 2500 rpm is still there but is now much quieter. From 2500 rpm up it is a really distinctive sound that is definately turns heads.

There is still a lot of interior noise at highway speeds but the wind noise and general road noise over shadows the exhaust.

I've got a78 d150 ran a flowmaster 2 chamber/hooker six to one headers for 12years or so but after the last rebuild it seemed a little to loud so I added a glass pack to tone it down now I'm replaceing the worn out hooker with a mopar 6 to one 3" pipe to a dynomax 6" round race muffler 3"out to a 5" supertrapp disk only

I've got a 67 with a glass pack, and I mounted mineright at the end of the system. I put an extension in where the old stock exhaust was and I chopped off the tail pipe about 6 inches from the spot it straitens out after the "axle bend" and it doesn't really drone til I cruise at about 75mph(I don't do it often unless i am passing). at 60-65 it sounds fine. accelerating is another story though. But I like the sound.

What exact headers are you using? I can't find any duals larger than 1.5" OD

The headers are Hooker and I believe the individual tubes are 1 5/8" (could be 1 1/2" never measured them) with 2 1/2" collectors.

The 2 1/4" dimension I mentioned is the diameter of the tubing in the exhaust from the collectors back to the bumpers. This is a standard size any muffler shop could bend up.
