I'm looking for suggestions as to a good setup for low end torque.

Cams:
any of the stock cams ? aftermarket?

Compression:
shaving the head? head gasket thickness? what CR should I be trying for?

I'm kind of a cheapskate, so money IS an object

Best suggestion I can make for a basically stock engine is the 1971-77 244 degree .406/.414 MP PN#3512639. You can cut the head up to 0.100". For a CR, I'd shoot for 9.0-9.5:1. There's a calculator you can play around with on this site. Your combustion chamber is "supposed" to be 54cc.

Buy the bushing kit for the cam gear from your friendly Dodge dealer. This is the same as for the single bolt Hemi. When you install the cam, degree it in. I'd set it maybe 2 degrees advanced to pump the low end torque a little. You have a negative 0.140 deck height and flat pistons (assuming your engine is all stock). There's no worries about "smacking" the valves with the pistons.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion Pioneer, I think I may actually have one of those cams around here someplace-the cheapskate in me is grinning big now!
You wouldn't happen to know what the straight-up installed centerline is supposed to be on that cam would you?

Centerline, hummmm. Rather than guess it would be better to wait on that one. Hopefully the Doc will chime in. He'd know for sure about the cl.

I can tell you what cam NOT to use for low end. I have the 268*/.460" Racer Brown, installed at 105* C/L and it is a pig down low.:(

For low end, get the compression as high as you can without detonating. Mine is at about 10.8-1 and I run 87 octane on the street.:)

I'd install that other cam at around 104-106* C/L.:)
