 Post subject: No Trans kickdown
PostPosted: Sat Apr 05, 2003 1:53 pm
Always wondered what was missing from my 63GT. Dawned on me I have no trans kickdown and no bolt holes for the bracket on the firewall, appears to have never been installed as this trans has never been out of the car .no linkage evident on trans either. Anyone out there seen similar situation on a slant?

Sounds like a stick shift car to me.

Don't know about 63, but on 65 1bbl carb, a rod came thru the firewall, and attatched to the carb. This rod twisted (rotated) to operate the carb. Attached to this rod was a lever, just foward of the firewall, which had a link rod, down to a lever on the trans. There was no holes or bracket on the firewall.

Should have been more specific in my initial thread, trans is 904 with pushbutton, Was reviewing photos of the beast taken in 66 and no trans kickdown then. Might explain the initial hard shift from cold idle to drive, other then that no driveability problems. Guess this explains my frequent replacement of the rear u-joint.

Go take a look at the throttle pressure lever, drivers side of the trans.
See if someone "wired it back" to give it some throttle pressure.
If this were just disconnected the trans would shift soft, go through the gears quickly and slip under high load.

Torqueflites without throttle pressure do not last long so there is something up with this one.

As always, Thanks for the info, now to do some investigating. By the way the Paddock has kickdown kits available, should I undo whatever I find and do it the right way? Or wait until I pull it for rebuilding which will be later this year if I avoid deployment. :D

The Duster project is missing a couple pieces (clips and small rod) from the carb to the kickdown linkage. Since it's for drag race only, should I just remove the kickdown linkage and wire it back at the trans (as Ron Parker suggested) or go salvage yard hunting to put it back together? Another well-respected Slant 6 afficionado in the NGMC said I shouldn't tie it back. I'd certainly rather just tie it back if it won't be detrimental to the trans. Thanks,
Rob

Just wire it back. With your time frame, you don't need any more work. It will not hurt a thing.
