I have a '74 Scamp with the finned 9" drums. Can I use a earlier 9" drum to replace these? say off of a 70-72 model car?
I need a smooth front drum so that my Aluminum slots will seat good on the front.

It doesn't really matter, as long as the diameter/width are the same. The finned drums might stay a bit cooler and hence last longer but other then that functionality is the same assuming size/boltpattern are the same.

I've heard that the finned drums may not fit. I simply went to Autozone and bought a new pair for around $40 - $50. These work well and most of the old ones are really rusty or can't be turned. Also, you can paint the new ones easily and keep them looking good and from getting rusty.

Further study has the '74 with a 9" X 2 1/2 brake. It may not be possibl;e to change to a 9x2 drum & shoes.

I believe all of the Mopar 9" brakes are the same 2.5" width.

Lou, how are you? The pre 74 stuff is 9x2 according to most info I have gotten from catalogs.
Now, if I could just find someone to machine me a couple of 1/4" adapters

i used a set of finned drums from a 74 duster on my '63 valiant and they are 10 inchers. i wasn't aware that they came in the 9 inch size as well. i did have trouble mounting my steel wheels but they quickly fixed themselves since the balance weight fell off in the process!

update: Pulled wheels today and James you are correct. They are 10" drums. Still dosen't resolve the problem. Weights are not the issue here, the fins are. My Aluminum wheels are flat across the back.

Bobby, I am doing fine. I wonder if you could get a machine shop that turns rotors/drums to just put your drums on the lathe and turn down the fins about 1/8" all the way around. That part of the drum is far from the friction surface so no harm done for braking. Wish I knew a place to get spacers for ya. You could also think about having spacers made with old SBP 9" or 10" drums by cutting up the drum and/or hub to make a spacer.

I swear I'll get pics of my kickdown linkage up for you soon. Sorry for the delay there.
