OK guys, have a wild hair of an idea I would like your opinions on. I have a bunch of early Valiants, and may pick up a fairly clean but ratty wagon. I always liked the wagons, but thought about making a "one off" 2 door wagon like a Nomad. Without being out in the barn and studying the parts, I don't think it would be terribly hard, but may be time consuming. I would think you would need to change the structural members in the roof if the post is cut out? Something must be different given that hardtops are supposed to weigh more. I have a couple hardtops for donors. Would upgrade the trim level to a Signet (buckets, chrome, etc). Questions:
1. I think it would be cool, do you?
2. Is it harder than I think? If so, why?

So...
Is the plan to cut two cars in half (more or less) and weld the back of the wagon to the front of a Hardtop or Sedan?

I was actually thinking about approaching it like they do on 4 door 57 Chevies ---- they modify the quarter, door jamb, and rear window mechanisms, and substitute hardtop doors. This leaves the roof, which I have to look at more closely to see how the structural members differ. So, the floor and roof skin would be as it was, with the quarters, doors, and such modified. Think it could work?

I like different, anything different is good. Sounds like a cool plan to me!

This sounds very much like the plans I had concocted for the 79 Aspen wagon my dad had in 84-85 while I was finishing my senior year of high school. I was gonna put the 2 door model doors on the wagon and cut out the door pillar, move it back to match up the length of the longer doors and then sheetmetal in the gap betweeen the relocated pillar and the back of the hole left by the now missing back doors. I kinda lost sight of this idea until I recently got an 80 Volare 2 door and tore it down to a bare shell to be restified. It came up in "bench racing sessions with fellow car club members. It would be both cool and different if done right, it would definitely get the looks and double takes!

That sounds really cool. Send me pictures when it's done!

They started with a vailant wagon welding the rear doors shut and covering the side window opening with panels. I saw this car around
the Encino area once or twice in the early nineties - it was a real
attention getter.
