Hi guys,

My first post here, I have a question. I'm in the market for a classic car but I'm basically a poor college student with an income slightly better than "whatever I finds, I keeps." I want a car that stands out but with gas prices what they are I'd like to find something that's not too thristy and also something reliable and fairly cheap to maintain. And anything that's NOT a Honda.

My research says that an old /6 would be my best bet. My father and his friends speak of the /6 with reverence in reguards to it's durability. Mileage is good and I understand that with some modification it can be a fairly formidable little torque monster.

Anyway, I found a '72 /6 Duster close to the house and would like your opinions on them. Not just the engine but the Duster as well. Is it reliable and easy/fairly inexpensive to keep on the road, or am I dreaming and "go buy a Volvo you punk"?

Don't go Volvo, A good running slant can average 18 in the city and low 20's on the highway (this varies, just so you guys don't pick me about your milage results) As you can see from reading these post, you would hard be pressed to match it's durability and ease of maintance and performance potential.

The key thing to look at is over-all condition of the car. If the car has under 200K and is in good condition then it is likely you can get some good service out of it.
On the other hand, if the car is a worn-out, beat to crap, "needs restoration" deal you should look for something else.

One other key point with getting into a "classic car" on a budget is that you need to be willing to work on the car yourself. If you do not have time, tools or the desire to do work on an old car, you would be best to find something a bit newer.

As for the reliability of the slant, let me give you my experience in the 6 years I have owned my Satellite. Besides recently replacing the exhaust manifold due to craking, I have done no other major work to mine. It has only let me down once, due to a faulty coil. The only maintinence outside of changing the oil is adjusting the valves and checking the fluids once a week. I tweek it and play around with it because I have to look for something to do with it! Since your looking at a '72, you might want to upgrade to electronic ignition. One less thing to do (changing points) and you can pretty much set the timing and forget about it. Dude you wont find a much simpler car. And as was already stated there is nothing more reliable than a slant. Most of the parts needed on a daily driver basis are cheap and plentiful.
