I am against Nitro methane in Slant Six racing. The reason being:
Most tracks we run are either NHRA or IHRA sanctioned. Both NHRA & IHRA ban nitro in any class except top fuel and funny car, Because of legal issues, and insurance concerns. We do not need to get track management mad at us for breaking one of thier rules.

That is not correct. Nitro is not banned anywhere NHRA operates. There is no insurance difference. Somebody is blowing smoke up your kilt. I have no idea what IHRA is up to. My understanding was they were easier to deal with in the tech department than NHRA was.

If that's what your track told you, you didn't ask the right questions. Nitro is not allowed in specific sanctioned classes. Since NHRA is not our sanctioning body where it comes to rules as they apply to the SSRN, they do not care. It's our job to define what is legal. We must also meet the tech requirements for the vehicle we drive.

This is beginning to sound like somebody has a bug up their butt about something specific. I take it this has nothing to do with fuel.

It is probably best to simplify our situation, adopting the same fuel constraints that govern NHRA Sportsman classifications. (Whatever IHRA calls it.) That would prohibit Nitro in competition.

Exhibition cars would be another matter. Do we allow for such cars where record setting is concerned? Once again, the track is going to want to know what fuel the car is using to be on the track. Our rules say the record must be set at an SSRN event. They don't say the car/driver must be competing in the points event. Could be done in Qualifying, T&T or whatever. Would such a car be eligible for record points, while not competing in an event? Don't see why not.

Why not just put nitromethane into the Unlimited class? Assuming track/gov/safety rules allow...

Then who is responsible to do all those checks?

I really don't know much about it or ever plan to use it. Is anyone planning to use Nitro? I don't know. My vote would be based on what others are saying and from what Ceej says some of that may not be true. But it is currently listed as prohibited on the records form and I guess that is why we are talking. I could be talked into allowing it in the unlimited class only, as long as it does not get us into any trouble with the tracks ...etc

In an Unlimited class, why would it matter? No checks required.

Dave M dabbled a bit with Nitro. The results were, he found the weakest parts in his engine. He's made those parts stronger, so we'll see how things go.

Nitro mixes with alcohol. There are other compounds that were marketed as Nitro-Methane that were something else. They would mix with gasoline. Some form of Propanol or methylethylene or some such stuff. I'm not a chemist.

Anyway. The simplest way to deal with Nitro, since so few people use it, and will be unlikely to run with it on a regular basis, would be to place a moratorium on it's use in any of our series. For competition, and for record setting. Those that want to run it, can set records with other sanctioning bodies.

I don't plan to run it. But you never know what will happen when the bug to go faster bites. This places a "Limit" on Unlimited, but that's beside the point. The sanctioning body can put any constraints in place for whatever reason they wish. For Safety, and/or for Public Relations with the track, it would probably be best not to allow it. (PR by reason that an oil down may be more likely.)

If I'm not mistaken, our cars are supposed to meet the NHRA/IHRA requirements as a "bracket racing car". By the newest NHRA rulebook I have (2010) Section 4a under engine Subsection "fuel"." Racing gasoline, gasoline, alcohol, gasohol, diesel, ethonol, natural gas, and propane permitted. Nitromethane prohibited".

Looking at the fuel requirements for all classes in the 2010 rulebook, the only cars allowed to run "nitro" are: top alcohol dragster injected, non supercharged, top fuel dragster, and funny car. Any of our cars fit there?

Slantzilla: Thanks for letting us know about the permits on nitro. I guess we might be grandfathered in since we have not purchased nitro in 13 years.
When Brent set the B/A record there was a fuel check done and we passed. Does that mean our record is the only one that really counts?
Anybody else that has set a record had a fuel check?
Even though we weren't caught, we admitted using nitro. I think the records should state if a fuel check was performed on the fuel when the record was set.
I bet nitro has been used on the west coast.

Mark, the permit thing is a big "Thank you" from Timthy McVeigh for using nitro to blow up the Murrah (sp) building.

No clue if you can grandfather, but I'd really hate to see you guys in the crapper over it.

In all honesty, I always thought your record should stand. When I ratted you guys out I thought it was a joke. :?

And yes, our cars are supposed to meet NHRA safety rules, unless that is another one of the ever cjanging rules because someone got their feelings hurt.

Maybe we should just have no rules and everyone gets to be champion?

I have no dog in this hunt, but I understand a little of the history behind the "ban" in Slant 6 Racing.

As Mark said, that was over 13 years ago... Somewhere back in the 20th century...

For the 2014 Rules Discussion I suggest:

1. We delete the wording that "bans" the use of Nitromethane and place it in the Unlimited Class.

2. Place E-85 in the Alcohol Class.

I agree with Rob's post above.

I would not have any problem with someone running nitro, as long as it would not violate track rules.

I have never seen any slant race car have a fuel test performed at a track yet.

As racers, we usually go by the honor code to self police ourselves. I would hate to start seeing us testing each other's gas tanks at tracks. If someone wants to dishonor themselves by cheating, have at it.

I would like to see Nitro allowed in Unlimited class. Or as CJ suggests in its own class. My FED will be nitro capable. Not sure yet whether I ever WILL run it or not but would like to be able to.

Can we also create separate classes for blue cars and red cars?

We already have more classes than cars.

Just give a free record with evety entry so everyone can feel good.
