It looks to me like that Slant 6 "straight out" Hillborn manifold does not appear in any of the dragmaster pics, and they used some other flange/intake type bolted to a tubular curved upward manifold.

I believe the Dragmaster crew adapted an existing Jaguar hilborn set up. Later Hillborn and Algon both produced Slant 6 specific injector set ups.

After 12+ years of searching for the 56 Alfa and or the Hilborn injected slant that was in it I FOUND IT AND MADE THE DEAL!!!!!

Turns out it has been sitting in a garage about 15 miles from my house since the early 70's. The car is long gone but the engine is complete with the Joe Hunt magneto, comes with another race built slant with 3 Weber 45 side draft carbs, pistons, cams, 2 fully race ported heads, custom built headers, 2 offy valvecovers, boxes of extra parts and 2 transmissions (can't remember what they were but there is an adapter plate too).

The injected engine is still the same metallic blue color that they painted the 56 Alfa back in the 60's. My dad even recognized the notch that he ground out of the fins on one of the valvecovers to clear something over 30 years ago.
Both engines are rusty but in very rebuildable condition with no ridges or damage to the cylinders and both heads have been ported and have big valves installed.

Best of all there are no numbers stamped anywhere on the injection unit and after talking to Hilborn it is very possible that this was #1, the "loaner" unit that went out to sponsored teams for test and tune.

Quite a find there! Keep us informed on your progress. I notice some unusual plumbing on one of the heads maybe to route coolant to the exhaust port area. See if you can learn anymore about that. The clutch looks like one of those Mopar fluid drive units that Pete McNichol used. This is really vintage Slant Six racing stuff.

It's official!
Payment schedule is set up and in mid February I will be the owner of both race engines, all the parts and the first Hilborn injection unit ever made for a slant six and run on the Dragmaster Dart Six dragster! I am still in shock that after almost 15 years of searching it will be in my garage!

I find it amazing that these parts you knew about were so close to you. And judging from the condition I see in the pictures, not being taken care of at all. You looked for them for years and it looks like they were just waiting for you to find them. I hope you can get this stuff up and running in a dragmaster chassis! Maybe one of the model companies will see fit to make this throwback rail for us to have in our garages! Great Score, Congrats.

I lucked out that the guy that is taking care of the deal (the owners nephew, owner is in a nursing home) is an ex drag racer and builds front engine rails (mostly with hemis and hilborns) and is just as excited that I am the guy that is getting them. I talked to him today and he said "It makes me happy to see these parts go to someone that has been looking for them for so many years, that loves slants and that has a family connection to them....what are you going to put the engine in?"
I told him that the Hilborn engine is going in a clone of the Dragmaster rail but the chassis will be updated to run with today's specs after I get a few other projects taken care of. I still need to finish up the chopped 50 Chrysler, 81 Yamaha XS650 chopper and the 64 Triumph chopper, you can never have too many projects....

Just got another message from Carol at Hilborn. I asked if they had any pictures, sales info or anything else regarding the slant units...

"Unfortunately, it does not look like we have the original pattern available any more. Many years ago there was a foundry fire and it is possible that the pattern was destroyed.
I was able to find the original orders for #101 (sold to Keith Black 7/13/1966) #102 (sold to Chrysler Corp.3/18/1968) and also orders #103 through #107 - I can scan the original order for you once you confirm the serial number on your casting.
I am attaching a copy of the original assembly breakdown. We can't locate any other photographs of the unit in our archives."

The unit that was on the Dragmaster Dart Six was run in 1964, #101 (production) was sold to Keith Black in 1966, the unit that I found (the same one that was run on the Dargmaster) has no serial numbers on it and I am pretty sure is magnesium and not aluminum like the production units were.
I have managed to track down and get the contact info for Richard Lafayett, the man who was heading up the 56 Alfa and had contacts in Chrysler/Dragmaster so as soon as I talk to him in person I will have the whole story on this unit.
